A Quick Tally
This is strictly unscientific and in reality this should have been posted as a poll for simpliciity's sake but here is the early exit:

Euro-badged.
That's with the 300D, 240D, what have you, but without the turbodiesel or diesel emblem.

i like the looks of a debadged benz but would not do it.
fear of someone putting gas in a diesel or diesel in a gasser is why i would not. either scenario can be disasterous. tom w

Badged!
I must admit, sometimes I'm a little envious when I see MB's with the "Turbo Diesel" badge on the trunk lid since my 350SD has just the "Turbo" badge - and I'm proud to be driving a diesel!
As far as smoke goes, I don't think the general public has any clue about diesels and the smoke they produce. They just see smoke coming from the exhaust and they think, "Oh my god - look at that FILTHY POLLUTING car!!" whether it's a diesel or not. I don't really think it makes a difference if they see our diesel badge - they don't suddenly say, "Ohhhh, its okay - it's just a diesel." We even have a 'snitch line' here in Las Vegas you can call if you see a smoking car. You simply call in and give them the license plate, then the cops send you a ticket in the mail and require that you immediately have a smog test - I have a friend who drives an older VW Jetta TDI and he has been 'snitched' 3 times in the last 2 years! Fortunately he has been able to explain it to the cops and they haven't given him any more grief. Anyhow, I prefer badged - I think they look great! Similarly, I like it when I see VW Jettas and Passats with their TDi badge - the Beetle TDi has no badge, so you can't tell which ones are diesels and which ones aren't!
