Pool noodles won't work in the long run. I've tried it, and it didn't work. In the end I got a used foam pad from a junkyard MB ($7) and installed it in place of the deteriorating horsehair pad. I also added a thin layer of foam below the factory foam pad to add some thickness to it, and reinstalled everything back. Now it's firm as it should be, and the contour is just right. The original seat I got the pad from was already torn, the springs were broken.
Actually, if you really want to get the correct feel, the seat springs provide the bounce and absorb the impact when you run over bumps/dips. The pool noodle in between seats only jars you, making it feel firm but it does not dampen the ride so you get a harsh ride (and sore back). Fix the springs, look for good used foam pads (or the entire seat bottoms) and swap them. Make sure the upholstery has the same number of pleats, some seats have 5 while others (84 and 85) have 6.
