87TD ticking noise after oil change

Hi,

I changed the oil for the first time in my 1987 300TD. It has 170,000 miles on it. The engine was running fine, but now I have a ticking noise that increases with RPM. Other posts in the forum indicate that this is probably hydraulic lifters and a different oil might solve it.

The oil used was Pennzoil 15w40, conventional, with Maxmimum Diesel Protection, whatever that means.

Should I go back and change the oil to a synthetic? Will it damage the engine to run like this until the next oil change?

Additionally, there is some gray/white smoke at cold start and under acceleration that was not there before. The exhaust doesn't smell sweet to me, and the return hose in flexible in the morning. The mechanic suggested that perhaps with a different oil some oil is being burned that was not before. Does this make sense?

Thanks
Tim

According to some, running synthetic in your engine helps the lifters to not tick. Regarding changing oil brands to stop the smoking it is possible. I have seen cars start to burn more oil after brands were switched, then switched back to the original and the excess consumption went away.

Did you buy the one that was on eBay in Miller Place on Long Island?

603's do that. Next oil change try some Mobil 1 or Amsoil and see if that quites the lifter. If not either live with it and ignore it, or change them. They are not hard to change actualy.

I think these engines just have loud top ends. Mine with 12 new lifters and Delvac 1 in the crank, you can hear them still. They don't tick but at real hot idle if you bring the rpms up you can hear them still.

I'm not one for snake oil but since the 3.5 was billowing smoke and destined for major work I tried some Lucas oil stabilizer. It cut down oil consumption a good deal. I can't comment on the long-term effects.

Some add ATF to the oil before an oil change. The ATF has strong detergents that can clean the oil passages to and in the lifters.

Synthetic oil can quiet lifter tick but it can take up to 10K miles on synthetic to get rid of the noise.

No, I bought the one that was on Craigslist in New Rochelle.

It's certainly a learning experience, never having owned a diesel or a Mercedes before.

Are there any New York-area groups for diesel Mercedes owners?

Thanks

For someone who has never worked on a car before, how hard would that be? One of the reasons I bought this car was that people said they are relatively easy to work on, and I'd like to learn a little more about cars.

Thanks

I wouldn't do it, if you have never opened up an engine before. The lifters are under the cam. You need a good torque wrench for this job thats about it.

Purchase a FSM first and take a look at the procedure. See what you think, I don't thinkg this is a first project though. Drop the cam sprocket or something like that and you are going to be in way over your head.

I wouldn't recommend this to be the first job you do by yourself.

Some folks pay the $3-400 for a set of new lifters then discover there are noisy ones in the new set. For the amount of work it takes to find and replace a bad one, I'd pay someone to do it and let them take care of rework under warranty.

If you don't regularly work on cars, you probably don't have the tools you need for this job. You only need basic wrenches, sockets and a torque wrench. Make sure you're ready for a new phase in your life (and a new time drain) if you decide to this on yourself.

If it was fine before the oil change, and now its loud, YOUR OIL IS TOO HIGH, drain some until you can see the level on the dipstick between the red markers.

Not to embarass you but the thread is nearly five years old. Note the date in the upper left corner of the last post in the thread.
