Extra info
While chasing another problem today I switched two fuses, unfortunately I don't know if they are responsible for the operation of the high beams or not but it is possible. Both did look ok but again.. who knows. I haven't got a diagram for my fuse box so can anyone tell me what two fuses are responsible for the high beams on a 1982 300sd?Thanks in advance.

I'll troubleshoot it with you after I return home tonight, if another member doesn't provide the necessary fuse numbers prior to my return.

When I had problems with my highbeams it was due to a dirty connection between the plug on the back of the headlight rather than a fuse. Pulling it off and hitting the connector with electrical contact cleaner solved the problem, both worked right away and have ever since. Make sure to check that too, espcially for an intermittent problem like that.

#4 is the LM high beam However, I agree that the connector might be the issue if the problem is intermittent. But, replace both of these fuses.........sometimes they crack and you can't see the crack until you pull the fuse and it falls apart in your hand. |

I would think fuses but...
Firstly we are talking about 2 different fuses failing at the same time if that is the case. Secondly you mention it began with one side, and then just as soon as that one side began mysteriously working the other side immediately failed. This makes me inclined to think you might want to make sure all of your grounds and plugs are clean, a bad ground can limit current flow and cause not enough to pass to light both at the same time. |

Fixed ,I believe
Last night while waiting for my wife at work I turned on the lights , went to the fuse box and turned the the fuses in their holders. As I turned one of them there was a spark right at the fuse where it contacts its holder and immediately every light was operable. I think it's time to change all my fuses and wire brush their holders. Thanks for the help.

Definitely. And, find a set of the copper/brass fuses. The aluminum fuses are crap.
