300Td heater smells

Hi

I have tried searching.

On my 85 Euro 300td a get a smell when the heater is on. It does not smell like exhaust or sweet like coolant, rather it is just kind of musty. It didn't smell in the summer when the AC was on.

I did have a problem with the drain for the AC, which I replaced with the top of a pop bottle. (I found that tip here)

Is there a cabin filter? Do I need to change it??

Thanks

Peter

Mold. Remove your blower and see if you can see anything living in there.

Might try Fabreeze brand deodorizer thru the vent at the base of the windshield and thru the two side dash vents.

I wouldn't use Febreeze, it smells a bit too fruity for a car.

Try spraying Lysol in the vents and into the cowl vents to kill the bacteria living in there! There are also specialized products that are supposed to work this way as well, but I've always used Lysol--

I'm a smoker

Ok I will try to kill the smell with Lysol. Do I put it in the vent at the bottom of the front window on the outside of the car ? I bought a carbon monoxide detector and had it in the car today. It showed zero so thats good. I was concerned as I have small kids.

I turn the interior fan off and spray it in there on the neon(there are under-engineered parts of the ventilation system, and it smells musty) and then turn it onto recirculate and spray it into the footwell vent on the passenger's side, but I'm not sure if there is one on a w123, isn't the air all outside air on these cars?

Is that is the reason the a/c never gets extra cold like on more modern cars?
