Starter problem

Went to start the car up the other day and the starter made a constant zzzzzzzz noise. No start. I took the key out, put it back in and it started right up. It has now done this three times (including this morning). It doesn't happen every time, just some times, and it always starts up on the second crank. When starters on different cars (the Volvo, VW's) have gone in the past I don't get this sort of sound, just a weak clicking. I can get a new one at the junkyard but I don't want to replace it if it's something else. Any ideas?

Sorry, I am no help on this, but mine does it too. Not too often maybe once a month. I will keep an eye on your post, thanks.

Charge your battery. Be sure all the connections to the wires from battery to the starter are clean and tight.
Then put a stethescope or hand ( no rings or bling ) on the solinoid...
you may find that it is what is making that noise.... and may be the only thing needing replacing...
However, these diesel starters take a beating over their lifetime... the brushes are very hefty and lots of stuff inside the starter may be marginal for working by the time the solinoid gives up...
I had the same symptoms on my starter ( and talked about it in the archives ) ... when I took it to a farm community all purpose starter/alternator/magneto repair place they took it apart right there in front of me... the three screws inside the end had gotten loose and you could see where they were arching.... at first it was like you experienced... not turn over, retry and work... but it kept getting worse....
They happened to have a rebuilt one which someone had not picked up.. at $100 ... the same amount they would have charged me to fix mine... but saved me a trip... and they did not require a core... so I have the old one..
They showed me the huge brushes... they had plenty of life left in them... it was ' collateral ' damage which took it down...

I'll have to pull mine out and fiddle with it. Thanks
