i think the answer is that with time and money one could make a 617 into a gas engine, but why would you want to? the reciprocating parts are very heavy and the engine wouldnt rev like gas engine should.

Thats what happens when you follow the manual's recommendation of 7000 mile oil changes. Do the engineers always know best?
