How are your gauges mounted..???

I have a boost gauge mounted now kind of out of the way. I will be installing a pyrometer over the winter and I'd like to put them together. I saw someone else here remove the ashtray and mount some gauges there. I may do that since I don't use the ashtray. Just wanted to know how the fit was and if it interfered with the radio at all.

Anyone else have any ideas on where to mount 2 gauges neatly?

Follow this link to see where my gauge is mounted. Not sure if I have room for 2 there.

I've got a boost gauge mounted in an aluminum panel that I screwed to the ashtray frame. There is room for 2x2" gauges and a couple of switches.

That doesn't sound too tough. Could you post a pic. I think I may do the same.

For three gauges, the fit is tight and interferes with smoking since the ashtray is gone. No interference with the radio or anything else. Much easier for two gauges. I haven't yet figured out an attachment for the panel since I don't want to mar the appearance with screw heads. So far, gravity is holding things together and that may be the solution I finally adopt.

My Zebrawood panel is almost finished; I'll post pictures in a few days.

In the Change Dish...

I took out the “change dish” (or whatever the heck it’s called), and replaced it with a wooden panel the same size. I have both my boost and EGT gauges there (oriented vertically, angled at the driver). I still have the ash tray drawer, but have taken out the tray, and use it as a very lame cup-holder…

Finished at last!

I finished my zebrawood panel and installed the gauges this morning. It looks pretty good. The color match turned out better than I expected.

The gauges are such a tight fit in the space available that I was unable to use the plastic screw-on clamps for the outside gauges. Instead, I used hot glue (see the backside photo). Crude, but it worked.

The panel is attached to the console with gravity and friction. The zebrawood is backed up with a sheet of aluminum, painted black because it is slightly higher than the zebrawood. This is because the sheet of zebrawood that came from the local Woodcraft store was just slightly shorter than the removed ash tray. Since it was otherwise perfect for the job, I decided to make it do.

Everything is attached with connectors so it can all be removed without cutting anything. The VDO gauges have an excellent night lighting system and are easy to see, although I'd rather have them up on the level of the top of the dash. Oh, well.

The gauge on the left is Exhaust Gas Temperature. The thermocouple probe is in the exhaust manifold, just before the trap cat. Mercedes put a 10mm tapped hole in the manifold on the 1985 CA models. Don't know if others have it; saved a lot of work.
