Burning oils as fuel (with a twist) questions

So I've seen many a discussion of people arguing back and forth about burning waste oils (trans/motor) and how it's OK/not OK etc.

Most of the not ok crowd points to sub-micron metals forming a honing compound. I agree with that assesment, but what about contaminate free, re-refined oils? I am not all that sure I'll ever actually do it, but the thought of making a short reflux still to re-refine oil as fuel is interesting to me and I'd like some opinions as to the viability of doing so?

Cheers all

I found some *sealed* 1 gallon jugs of 10W30 oil that I'm using as fuel. I pour in about 2qts when I fill up with diesel.

I was thinking in substantionally higher ratios.
Somewhere around 30/30/40 refined oil/kerosine/diesel2 or BD.

Also, other than a smallish pot/reflux hybrid still anyone have a design better suited for the higher temperatures needed? I was thinking a nomex (or asbestos) wrap around the pot and tower would be a good idea.

I used to filter then burn my oil from oil changes, differentials, tranny, etc, but I stopped doing it because I would enevitably get some on my hands and the thought of nasty heavy metals absorbing through my skin was scary.

A good point, but again fixed with the distillation of the oil...

I’ve burned the same for years w/o a problem - properly filtered, of course. I find Nitrate gloves neutralize the scary, nasty heavy metals on the skin thing.

Use of vacuum on the distillation column helps to reduce the overall operating temperature of the system and thereby reduces the amount of or chances for scorching of the product. Most of the units I designed over the years 1969 to 1988 were electrically heated by immersion heaters in a special section hung diagonally under the kettle. This allowed for running the batch kettle nearly dry, this was important for efficiency and especially true for vacuum distillations.
