Hi! I'm new here... a few questions

Hello to everyone. I have a 1983 300 TD wagon named Abigail, or abby for short. Close to 300k miles A few weeks ago the bumper was ripped off. Thats the least of my worry's right now. Abby was formerly hempcar, and I still run her on waste veg oil.

She is need of some engine work. Especially the timing chain. But, she also has a leaky front main seal, leaky oilfilter housing gasket and the sway bar bushings are shot.

So I have a shop, a hoist and stand and am planning on pulling the engine and doing timing chain, but if the engine is out and all the covers are off why not replace all the chains right? Besides, I also need new engine mounts and shock

Well, Ive talked myself into this but am still wondering what else? All of these things would be so much easier out of the engin bay. Is there any truth to a rumor I heard of vacuum pumps going bad around 250k and shredding bad stuff into some where with valves? It was something I picked up in conversation with the previous owner. Should I replace or rebuilt the vacuum pump?
Secondly, how difficult is it to pull this engine? How difficult is reassembly, and pitfalls to watch out for.

I'm really glad i found these forums. Great, packed with tons of great info I need. Full of i deas I had been wondering about my self especially the 3" exhuast and the intercooling, The ALDA tweak made a dramatic improvement in abby's attitude before we left on our round the country jaunt.

Thanks opions are welcome

Not to hijack the thread, but

I live in Norfolk and will shortly live in Windsor (Isle of Wight County). Maybe we can draw on each others experience. My knowledge is limited but I know which direction to turn a wrench I will be commuting about 80 mi/day, so keeping my 124 in top shape is important to me.
