Hi
I am trying to track down the cause of poor running after a cold start; the car has done 170k miles and has been well maintained. The glow plugs have all been changed for new Mercedes ones. The car starts on the first turn of the key, but then idles badly - like a misfire on a petrol car. There is a little white bluey smoke but not a huge amount. Once warm it runs really well. There are no leaks around the injectors and the leak off pipes are new as well.
There is one other symptom - when cold it seems like there is a small reisstance to the engine first turning over - like you would get with a weak battery.
Could these symptoms be caused by an injector leaking fuel into the cylinder overnight?

Thanks for advice

I had similar problems.

I replaced the timing chain, cam sproket and chain tensioner.

That solved the problem.

1) Almost sounds like the afterglow function isn't working properly... the plugs should stay on for up to 180 seconds after starting. I'd start by checking that.

2) Wouldn't hurt to check timing chain stretch, it's a known issue on these cars... this is not likely though.

Thanks for the responses. The after glow has been checked and is OK. My best guess is injectors worn - dont think it is the timing chain - this would be noisy hot or cold - and the oil is changed every 5 or 6k miles.

Would appreciate longshores feedback if you manage to fix it

Thanks

Could be injector related... a Diesel Purge treatment is worth a try for sure.

The timing chain would NOT necessarily cause noise, like the M119 does. It simply elongates and makes the cam and IP timing way off. Read this Tech Service Bulletin for details:

Looks can be deceiving. Remove the intake manifold and look real close at the ends of the wires where they are attached to the sensors. If the insulation is gone in those areas then it has gone bad. If it has not been replaced it is more than likely bad.

Make sure you don't have any leaking fuel lines. I started a thread recently concerning Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel fuel, and some of the problems I've seen recently. Take a look Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel

I wish it was only the fuel lines. My problems started before the switch. My car is still in the shop, it seems to be stumping everyone. when I find out I'll let you know.

Have they ruled out the injectors themselves?

I have just been pricing up the injectors here in UK (convert £ to US$ by multiplying by 1.9 - ie nearly twice as many dollars).

Merc dealer part number 000 010 0551 - £144 tax EACH! (ie times 6 = total £!015
Specialist indi £98 + tax - = total £690
Auto factor Bosch part 0986430245 £33 + tax = £232 total.

So, be careful where you buy the injectors if that is the problem.
