110 Chassis 200D Questions

Car is a 1968 200D Fin back. Any idea what is involved in fixing the windshield wiper "transmission" and fixing the heater vents and control valves?

Need estimate on labor hours and complexity as well as approx $ parts if A) I did my self, B) MB did it.

Regards Tom

Are you talking about the winshield wiper "linkage" that connects the two wiper arms from underneath the dash? If it's anything like the one on my W115 chassis 240D, it's a real pain to get at. The two sides apparently snap together simply enough but you have to get under the drivers side footwell and reach up in a tight space to get to it. I tried to fix it on mine, became frustrated, was told it would cost hundreds to get it fixed by a professional, so I'm waiting until I'm ready to have at it again this winter. At least my driver's side wiper still works.

Heater vents & control valves - no clue on those, but I believe it's a pretty simple system compared to the climate control systems on later cars. You might have to tear apart the center console to get at things though. You might want to repost your message in the "vintage" forum as you're likely to find some other fintail owners will respond.

No comments on the wipers, (though I've dug those out on a 126,) but the heater vent controls were not TOO bad a job on my 67 230.

I pulled the dealer installed a/c (two bolts on the ends) and the radio. I found it easier to also pull the speaker in the center over the controls for access from the top. In my case, the controls had gotten a bit stiff, and forcing them had broken the control wires. I was able to pull out the wires from their sheaths and replace them with standard bailing type wire, which I pushed through the sheaths, adjusted the length, and then cut off the excess after tightening the locking screws. I did grease the wires before pushing them in. They slide easily now.

The shutoff valves get tight if they are not exercised often enough. You might need to pull these to free them up and replace o-rings, but I've not been in there.

Good luck with your fine car!
