Mystery whirring sound?

Just recently I've noticed a whirring sound coming from (what sounds like anyway) inside the passenger side dash of my 87 190D. It comes on as soon as I turn the ignition to the first click and stays on. Seems independent of the climate control settings, fan speed etc... What's in there that can make noise?

It isn't a healthy sounding whir.

Cheers

The ACC has an aspirator motor that draws air over the cabin air temp sensor. Either it's come loose from its fitting or the motor is giving up. No idea where it is in a W201.

A drop of ATF might prolong the life of a tired motor.
