Mine have the MB logo and "Ate" in script on the casting over the piston too. It is rather dim. I had to lightly wire brush the casting to see it. I have heard the Bendix have the word Bendix in block letters.

I understand that all the brands of calipers are interchangeable so unless you are striving for factory exact matching. get what is in stock.

ate or bendix were fitted from the factory. exactly interchangable but minor differences in the retaining pins for the pads. i prefer the ate because the bendix have fussy little hair pins that hold in the pad pins. they can be lost or bent.

If there is an insignia on the outside, they are ATE. Bendix don't have much ID. If you are replacing them, you can go with either. They both have identical pads, too.

I've undestood that calipers should be replaced with a like kind. ie Bendix to Bendix, ATE to ATE.

If vehicle has Bendix presently in use, replace only in pairs.

Additionally, they use two slightly different methods of securing the pads in place...the Bendix calipers have retaining pins with hairpin keepers. ATE calipers use a spring clip to hold the retaining pins in place.

Dunno about the ATEs (forgot to look last week) but, Bendix calipers have the Bendix logo cast into the housing.

Ahhh, I see said the blind man... so if you get mismatched calipers, be sure you get the retainers and springs to go with them.
best to just stay with the same type.

You'll get the proper new retainers and springs with the whatever new caliper you purchase. I have both types on my cars and have never had problems with ATE spring pins but personally, I prefer the Bendix retaining method with the hairpin.

Hmm, when I bought my front caliper for my 82 SD, it did not come with anything. I had to purchase the pins and retainers separately. Darn import auto store...

When I was looking for calipers Advanced Auto had the best prices. IIRC, $69 for a rebuilt loaded caliper, lifetime warranty. RT

i wouldnt hesitate to mix and match on my own car.

but if i were a shop i would only do pairs. for liability reasons. as a professional i wouldnt want to take their word that the other side is fine.

Definitely need to know ATE or Bendix if you are overhauling your own, the two have different seals, heat shield and dust boots.
Personally I prefer to buy loaded new or rebuilt from a warehouser...but never any from AutoZone or O'Reillys.

as noted above the pads are the same with either brand of caliper.
