300D axle rubber
For an 85 300D, how do you remove and replace the rubber that covers the axle... one of the it near the differential, and the other one is near the wheel?
|
Lift rear end or car..beer of choice....remove rear wheel...remove 13mm shaft bolt from axle center.....beer of choice....drop diff' assembley down...drain diff oil...remove end plate.....beer of choice......extract C clip in spider gear housing...ease axle from wheel end and then diff end.....beer of choice.....remove boot...replace boot...reassemble axle....beer of choice.....fit to car....fill diff...attach wheel...lower car ...beer of choice.
There's two kits available...one has metal cans and rubber boot, #126 350 02 37 the other has rubber boot only, #126 350 03 37. The cans need special tool to uncrimp/re crimp. The rubber boot only kit comes with rubber boot, three clamps and grease pouches. You need two kits for each axle. . . |
Okay, how much is this tool? I own enough MBs to warrant spendy tool purchases... It's gotta be less than $300 for a pair of reman axles.
Next, I'd need four 126 350 02 37 to do two axles correct? Lastly, what about all the ~8mm allens that bolt the axle to the diff? |
What is this can for?
Since you need 2 kit per axle, I think the dealer told me it has an inner and outer one? So do you need one of each kit you listed, or I need two of either one? What kind of special tool is that to crimp it? Since you have to drop the differential, think it is a good idea to replace the mount and flex disks? |
I'd do the mount and discs... sway bar mounts too.
|
Is there another name for the swaybar mounts? Can't seem to find it.
Here's the rubber pictures: Outer http://69.0.158.19/live/K601016585FEB.JPG Inner http://69.0.158.19/live/K601016586FEB.JPG |
Bushings maybe? It's not the end links, do those too, but it's where the bar is attached to the body. Don't fret, I can't find the part number either. :(
Consider shocks while you're in there. I checked on the Astoria Flexx Gun tool, it's about $220 and you can use $10 boots. The crimp tool is less than $20. Hell, I can do one car for less than the cost of one new axle... Pretty sure I'm going to buy one of those. |
Whats the difference between the flexx gun and the crimp too?
|
HitMan
Please post back your experience with the flex tool. I would consider buying one if I could get some feedback on actual field experience from someone who has used one. I have an 82 300SD, a friend has an 81 300CD--so thats four axles right there. |

The crimp tool, crimps the boots onto the axle. That flexx gun stretches the boots over the CVs. I'm not sure how to get them on otherwise. |

Look what I own that can use it. LOL :D |
Now, we just need to know whether 2 axles = 4 boots (2x boot only) or 4 cans and boot (2x cans and boots kit) or 2 of each?
|
Okay...here's the deal Sparky...
You neeed one can set and one boot set for each axle....why? ...because you do not need to remove both cans to instal both rubber boots. You slide the joint apart at one end only....Watch how it comes apart..there's no room for assembly mistakes. If you take it to Mercedes, who have the tool/s, they charge 2 hours labour just to reboot without parts...that's $200.00 at most MB dealers. The cans are smooth crimped together with a rubber square 'O' ring between the cans..and origonally filled with oil, not grease.....so cripping them means you have to allow for the 'O' ring thicknesss...and no, you can't leave it out because it makes the can fit so tight the axle will wear through the can in about 200 miles. The special band crimping tool is $107.00 and the can crimper is about $400.00. I have only ever rebooted one pair ....had to improvise a lot.....I'll never do another. Knock yer selves out here....drool, drool.... http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes.htm#Axle . . |

Hrm, so what do you recommend for axles?
