Two fuel lines and one brake line run under the driver's floor over the rear suspension to the back of the 123. I have some rust on those lines and I'm curious about how much of a problem that might be. Replacement looks interesting because of their location over the rear suspension. Any experience or suggestions appreciated.

talk about timing...I just went thru this same senario with my '85 wagon. I could smell a little diesel, but I found drips of brake fluid near the rear drivers side tire. When I inspected the lines I found that salt and such had built up in the rubber mounts that hold the three lines to the floor panel and corrosion had set in. The fuel line is an easy temporary fix as it is a low pressure line, you can just cut it at the leak and slip on a piece of flexible fuel line with clamps until you can get it on a lift and check the whole line. The brake line, however is one that I would not do myself as it requires proper bending of lines to match the contour of the old line. I could not find anyone who sold a brake line already preformed to a W123 wagon so I brought it to the dealer and let them change it. It cost me about $240 to fix the line.
Good luck. |

Has any one changed the lines them selves...i have found a company (classictube) that will copy my lines if i bring them in...all stainless - about 200 bucks for the brakes and another 200 for the fuel (100 per route) ill replace all the flex lines with braided SS, and new rubber fuel lines and clamps...
i want to change out all of my lines for good measure and insurance as the old gal is turning 24 this september....and i want to replace teh front strutbar bushings and am converting to manual tranny - so mine as well do it when the booster and master cylinder are being rebuilt! I CAN NOT FIND ANYONE THAT SUPPLIES THESE HARD LINES!!!!!! any advice on pats and or supplies would be great...im going to call the dealership soon with part numbers/availability and price??? i would like to replace the rubber holders and brakets too while im pulling off teh old ones. Thanks Every/Any one Jake |

bulk tube rolls
Hello Everyone
Just did a mid eighties 500 sel two weeks ago. Two fuel lines, one fuel vapor line and brake line. Used bulk tube rolls and bend too fit. Ten hours of work on a hoist. Used old rubber mounts, made several new clips too hold them. A diesel would be far simpler. Have a great day.

i dont mind bending my own line...ive done it on other cars and light trucks/suv
and have thought about it here... but id much prefer to have oem (not that my car is original at all) or as close to it as possible...i have access to a few lifts and a frame puller/combo and such thats not the issue with me here... i am looking for a good source of parts and info. also difficulty in the rear section of teh car, that is were i hear the/any trouble is(rott, tightness ect...).... my car is a w123 230 sedan year 1980 Thanks alot everyone Jake ...... but ten hours of work does not seem that bad for the job...perhaps that is what will be done with the fuel lines...they are very clean and straight forward - i imagine that i could get them to look great with some time. |
