240D 1983...Bosch Duraterm glow plugs relay kit...

Like you already know, i own a 240D 1983 and i'm living upnorth in the country of cold(Montreal, Canada) so starting my benz during the winter can be such nightmare(5 fahrenheit) and sometime
it's just impossible to do(-4 fahrenheit)... because i can't plug my block heater, the car is park on the street.

I read in this forum about Bosch Duraterm...and i found the idea absolutly wonderful, keeping the glow plugs on after the engine is running...
But, when i asked my mecanic about it, he told me than my MB is already equiped with...
Is he right?
Do you know about Bosch duraterm glow plugs kit ?
I need to change the glow plugs relay anyway...any suggestions...?

If you have a stock 240D, the glow plugs turn off the instant you release the key when the car starts. There is no afterglow on a diesel USA MB until the 90's 602 engine.

If I remember right, in a thread a long time ago, someone said something about disconnecting a wire at the relay, that would leave the plugs on for a while longer after the car starts.

Yes, do a search on the words "purple wire".

If I still lived in the cold north with one of these cars, I would wire in a switch, so I could enable it in the winter and disable it in the summer time.

I have the post-glow kit installed on my 300D, it keeps the GPs on for a couple of minutes and the engine does run smother and smoke less. Try calling Phil to see if you can find a kit, they are only a couple $100 (about the same cost as the stock relay), and they are definitely preferable to any of the hacks discussed here.

Personally, I prefer the hack. It does the same thing, costs about $100 less and you can add a switch to disable afterglow if you want.

If you look on the relay, you will see a small harness plug.

In that plug is a purple wire that when you turn the key to the crank position it sends voltage to that wire and shuts off the glow plugs.

If you pry the cover off the harness plug you can slide the purple wire out of the plug.

Fold the wire back and tape it good.

The glow plugs will stay on after start until the relay times out (30 - 45 seconds or so)

Cold idle will improve.

Cost--- zero

Drawback--your glow plugs will not last as long.

In the warm weather you can reconnect the wire or if you want you could switch the purple wire so a simple flick of the switch would disable afterglow for the summer.

purple wire disconnect=afterglow

purple wire connect=no afterglow

simple, no?

I don't know about the early 240D's but my '84 SD glows for about 30 seconds when the key is turned.
You can easily check to see if you have an afterglow timer by watching the dome light.
Even still I usually have to glow mine twice.

Have you considered a block heater?

Hi Danny,

Do you glow yours until the glow light goes out or do you continue the glow cycle until your dome light brightens back up?

It doesn't really do the same thing. Even if you hack it, the stock relay will only stay energized for 30 or 40 seconds total (before and after the engine starts). The kit will keep the GPs energized for a couple of minutes after the engine starts, which is actually long enough to do some good. I wouldn't bother changing the wiring and adding a switch just to get an extra 15 seconds of GP time after the engine starts.

Phil is very helpful, I would give him a call, the kit is available:

F1101-88322 KIT for converting LOOP series GP to hotter pencil parallel system
F1101-88322 KIT for converting LOOP series GP to hotter pencil parallel system

I bought mine a few years ago.

Don't hack, do it properly.

2.5 hours??? I could do it in an hour in my driveway.
