Low RPM idle @ cold start?

What would cause this? I'm guessing my rack damper bolt is too tight?

JMan300sd 11-01-2006 01:20 PM

I have the same issue. When I start up my car it sits at about 500 on cold mornings after I rev it sits back down at about 750-800. I tried adjusting the rack damp. pin, but If I loosen it at all my car shakes terribly without any noticeble higher rpm on a cold idle. I have a feeling it might be timing related and I am going back to the drawing board with my injection pump this weekend. Ill probably give the millivolt method a try again although the last time It took me several hours to only get partially imrpoved results in the running of the engine.

I just set my timing with the AB light, so I don't think it is that. Hrm. Maybe the pin is worn?

Maybe just the IP is worn.

Since the 603 has a computer controlled idle and no rack pin... it has to be the SD...

My SD will crank over once and start instantly after a 6 second glow when its 25F out, it did this morning! :D Idles really low and quiet at first (can barely hear it, its like a V8 gasser), usually I just drive away within 10-20 seconds, but if I let it sit it will actually raise its idle after a couple minutes, and idle high for about 4-5 mins, then it settles to its normal idle. Pretty weird considering it has no computer controlling the idle or anything. :D

I'm glad someone finally mentioned this phenomena. My car does the same thing, I never mentioned it before. It's almost like a gasser with an electric choke. The change occurs like clockwork. I'm not complaining about it or want it changed for that matter. Just glad to know it occurs on other MB's.

My 1984 300TD exhibits the same behavior.. I just chalked it up to cold oil/loose cold engine being harder to push... was thinking about hijacking a throttle cable off a lawnmower or some other similar device and building a high-idle/cheap cruise-control-fix device... :D kind of like the "cruise" my dad had on his old FJ diesel landcruiser.. he never shoulda sold that thing:mad:
