1980 240D Cabin Blower speed switch cable

Anyone out there know what the bowden cable attached to the cabin blower switch operates....Its the type with the little white plastic balls attached to each other with some type string or wire.... I am guessing it moves an air flap somewhere.....An air distribution diagram would be great....manual climate control....

I have been told that it opperates some sort of AC flap. I'm not sure what it does in my car which has no factory AC. I had a thread going on this topic a while back.

If you are referring to the cable that runs from the central one of the three rotary switches (fan speed) then it attaches to the evap box by a circuitous route to the left of the centre console, behind the heater box (between the heater box and the firewall just above the tranny tunnel) and then over to the passenger side of the car where it connects to the front of the evap box directly behind the glove box. It appears to operate some sort of flap inside the evap box. But I have no idea exactly what this is supposed to do as when I was troubleshooting mine it made no apparent difference to air flow at all. However as my AC compressor is seized I couldnt tell you if it works in conjunction with AC only or not. There have been several threads on this topic from DMorrison who did a lot of AC work on his cars and on my car as I'm currently wrestling with the whole mess in mine.

Maybe it's one of those luxury items, reducing the blower fan noise.

Some may be familar with older style climate control systems where the positive pressure or "ram air affect" can be used at higher speeds to circulate air through the cabin instead of using the fan. I was told that moving the knob between "off" and the first line allowed the driver to adjust the quantity of airflow under these conditions. Sounds like the cable works a flap to control the airflow somewhere in the box. I was never able to verify that though. If I am correct, the adjustment would be most noticable at highway speeds while adjusting the knob.

You are correct,( I just rebuilt a evap/heater box out of a 80 240 which I am going to install in my 85 300td ), however I doubt if this feature would make any noticeable difference unless you replace the deteriorated foam seals on the flaps in the box.

I agree. With the knob in the off position, you can still get airflow from the vents. A bad seal on the flaps will do that.

And I'd imagine that by now every flap in these things is bad unless already re-built which makes that bowden cable practically meaningless.
