I'd only bother with rebuilds, or I have been told you can get them from the dealer at pretty good prices.

At least for me its not worth the effort unless a rebuild is going in, someone elses 20 year old junk is just that.

The 722 is cheap and simple to rebuild, a used is too much of a gamble.

I checked with the dealer about 3 months ago. $2650 for a reman 722.315. Oh, and $1200 more for a torque converter.

He said he sends most of his customers to Sun Valley.

Anything more than about $1500 installed is insane. Even that is pushing.

Are you sure it was a reman and not NEW? I heard that price floated for a new trans, certainly thats not a bad way to go for a brand spankin new out of the box trans.

I found a local guy that can probably do mine for $1k, I'll talk to him about it eventualy.

I have my box of tissues nearby and am sitting down, so now lets talk prices.

How much is "reasonable" when you are taking about a tranny rebuild? From what I hear, Transmission replacements are supposed to be somewhat easy to change out, its repairing them that gets expensive. I could be wrong though.

Not much, if you have a W126 figure about $1k-$1,500. Its the 722.6 that gets pricey, I think those run about $3k whole sale.

Lucky these cars have pretty basic gear box's that are easy to remove and fairly cheap to rebuild. Heck when the XJ8 blew its tranns apart that was a bit over $6k, ZF quality for ya!

I have been told they are about the same, never priced one out. Don't know how easy they are to yank, the W126 is cake. There is so much ROOM!

My car's transmission failed in April 2003 at 188K miles, while owned by the second owner in Campbell (south San Francisco Bay area). Third gear went out first, followed by reverse. The tranny was replaced with a rebuilt one by an indy. The cost was $1986 for the tranny plus $679 labor. Total with tax was $2907.

This wouldn't be an issue for a car with a manual transaxle right? If that's the case, the manual transaxles would be in higher demand than the automatic. Is that the case?

Although I am somewhat vaguely unfamiliar with transmissions, could a manual ever go bad? or is that unlikely?

Ok, lastly I have a question that just might be the dumbest one, but I thought I would ask for the hell, of it. If a manual transmission only has a clutch that is expendable, how much would it run to take a manual car and use parts from the manual 123's to make it a standard out of your dying standard transmission.
