Try the search function to look at other posts. These engines are known to be difficult to prime.

You got the engine to start so If still no activity on number one you might want to check the number 1 delivery valve out. I suspect if constantly open that line cannot produce fuel. The piston would just push fuel up and suck it back in. I hope this sounds sensible. I think the rebuilder would have caught a bad cylinder in the pump. Might be wrong here as certainly not knowledgeable about pumps so just my opinion. Nothing you have done in my opinion either. Unless you had the valve out and did not put it back in of course. But the 87 injection pump times another way does it not.

If the engine starts and runs.........without cylinder #1 firing........it's going to be very rough and shake the entire vehicle. You'll definitely know something is amiss.

If this is the situation, how have you confirmed that #1 is the cylinder that is not firing?

Brian you missed that there is no fuel in # 1 line perhaps? Thats nothing I missed that he had the engine running at first glance. I think he has a problem.

I'm trying to grasp whether it ran on five cylinders for some length of time and then each injector line was removed in sequence to figure out that #1 has no fuel.

If the engine ran for some amount of time on five cylinders and #1 refuses to deliver fuel, then, I agree.........something is amiss with the #1 delivery valve or plunger.

Your right Brian. It is wrong to assume. I assumed since it was up and running there would have to have been enough time for the number one line to naturally bleed out. I still suspect that to be true though. By the time he established where the problem was the engine had run long enough. If just a quick burst and off again I do not think he would have localized the problem. There is perhaps hope here if the shop had reason to have that valve out for some specific pump check on their jig perhaps. Could it still be out or would he have noticed it? Simple check might be to remove line completly and spin engine over. If fuel rises and is being sucked back down it has to be the valve or seat. Since my knowledge is limited perhaps the o ring is pinched or something. I guess I would turn the motor over slowly and watch how the well up behaved. He could always compare it to number two if confusing.

Did you time it by the drip method? If so did you put all the parts back correctly including the spring?
