you kind of squeeze it to deform it and it should come right off. I have done this twice on two different cars. The most recent one I did, on the sd, it does make a ticking sound and I did not notice that on the last one. Still works though.

A set of 3 gears is $69 shipped (highest failure ones).
Why bother.

Speedometer & Odometer Repairs — Overseas Speedometer

$125. and they change the gears and do all the labor.

Cleaned numerals, and reset to the expected mileage (about 1000 lost during the slippage).

It is an alternative worth considering, however, thinking back to when I fixed the one on the '83 (which wasn't working when I bought the car) I remember that just removing and reinstalling the cluster (which includes removing the odo from the cluster which you also need to do if shipping off to repair) was half, if not more, of the work.

So you're weighing $69 for the gears shipped plus installing them (removing the old crud) against $125 plus paying for and going through the shipping rigamarole - paper work, proper protective packaging, taking it to the USPS/UPS and waiting for the shipment - can you drive your car for a week without instruments?

I happen to also be weighing this now since I'm now only getting about 75 miles on a tank of diesel in the '85

To remove the cluster and remove the speedo from the cluster took me about 45 minutes...........working slowly.

I packed the speedo carefully with bubble wrap and shipped it USPS. Had to be there anyway.

I have a spare speedo from a gasser that I used for a couple of weeks. Read 100 mph when I was doing about 60.........

The actual cleaning off the old gunk (plastic on old gears had "melted" supposedly due to interaction with grease) and popping on the new gears took me all told perhaps 25 minutes tops. Prepping, reading all about it, fretting about messing it up perhaps took a couple of hours.

Of course I did mess up in one aspect - I did not apply grease, which was not at the time (in 2006), but is now, included in the assembly instructions. So I now have the ticking noise to remind of that
