Odometer Broken W126

83 300SD W126
Symptoms - Odometer starting ticking and then numbers stopped in both regular and trip odometers.
What I found was the outermost gear (48 tooth - quarter sized) had 3 broken teeth - they were lodged in the small 12 tooth gear (first gear in line from the electronic sender). The broken gear has part # 547 001 z12 z48. Anyone know where to get one? Thanks.

it's always that one that breaks, and you have no choice but to buy a new/remade gauge

Ticking?

Does an audible ticking mean the odometer is in trouble? For a recent repair, my battery was disconnected leaving my radio on 'CODE' and me with nothing to listen to (no music) in the car - so I can hear the odometer ticking very quietly as I drive. Does this mean my odometer may be about to go out on me???

(I'll be replacing the radio very soon, so I haven't bothered to find the code for the original one. I figured I would just drive around listening to the motor until I have time/$ for the replacement - gotta love these diesel engines!:D )

What tooth count do I need for a 2.88:1 axle and a 2.47:1???

Hmmm.........

I don't know. I think the only sure way is to take things apart and count the teeth. From appearances on the website, I don't get the impression that they would know either...... ("I ONLY MAKE AND SELL GEARS")

Yup, looks like it's time to take some cars apart in the yards. lol Probably cheaper too. :D

Thanks for the good info, guys...Sam - www.odometergears.com seems good...Jeff Caplan runs it and he seems to love his work and will take care of customers. He talked about how one time he wanted to buy a gear for an old Beemer and no would sell him one....so he bought the molds and equipment to make them. Interesting niche business. A set of 3 gears is $69 shipped (highest failure ones).

I bought gears from him before. We couldn't decide which one I needed so he sent me both for the same price.
One piece of advice. Buy all 3 gears or prepare to replace them again.

Odometer works again after replacing gears. Still get a tick sound when cold that lessens after some miles on it and cabin temp increases ~40 deg F. Jeff Caplan didn't recommend any lube - worries about attracting dirt. I'm thinking about a small dab of white lithium grease...what do ya'll think?

I would tend to think like Jeff Caplan, grease attracts dirt. It might be best to let the gears take a set to each other. They probably will quieten down in short order since temperature seems to alleviate the clicking.

I have an issue trying to get the rod for the smallest gear off. There is a magnet on the left end and I've already broken the magnet into two from one odometer and have another magnet cracked. I'll try gorilla glue, but is there a better way to take them off that by force? Seems like the only way to get that rod off is by taking the magnets on the left end off. The right end has a piece of brass locked onto the rod.

vstech 12-03-2011 10:36 PM

you cut the brass fitting with side cutters, and it pops right off. DO NOT TRY TO FORCE THE FITTING OFF!!!

vstech 12-03-2011 10:37 PM

let me know if you need additional 126 assemblies... I've got a few.

tomas_maly 12-03-2011 11:35 PM

You mean wire cutters would work on the brass? ie careful not to cut the rod.... I have a pair of needle nose pliers with some cutters on it.
