rpm at highway speeds ...300sdl

What should an 86 sdl rpm's be at say 70mph?
Mine is running at about 2800-2900....just seems a bit high.

Have changed the tranny gasket, fluid and filter....but this car sat for quite a while and the fluid is still pretty dirty...seems to shift ok perhaps a tiny bit harsh.
And there is a leak of some sort on the passenger side of tranny above the gasket. The filler tube is not where its coming from. (the leak wasnt there before i changed the fluid but i didnt mess with or break anything where the fluid apears to be coming from)
Is there any such thing as coasting in these cars? transmission seems to be "engaged" all the time....let off the pedal and the car seems to be slowed by the transmission at least to some degree (not like putting on the brakes but almost)

Anyone have a good or bad story about a transmission flush in the sdl?
This one has 236 k on it and i am considering flushing it.

That's the difference on M/B's. The torque converter remains coupled when the vehicle is driving the engine so that you get significant braking power each time you lift your foot. This is dramatically different from the typical American vehicle that allows the engine speed to drop off dramatically and permit the vehicle to coast. The M/B process definitely extracts a fuel economy penalty for the privlege.

I recently had the '86 SDL flushed. $95 to do it.......and I brought the filter........same deal........."it's a Mercedes"........... No issues.
