Gas in a Diesel

Hi, A local guy has a 81' TD wagon.
Said it ran great until he put regular unleaded in it!
Its still running fine, but he reports a loss of power and rough running at idle.

Bottom line is he's selling it for a good price and i'm wondering if it would need a new motor. What damage could he have done??

I don't know how it is still running. Usually a diesel engine will self destruct when run on gasoline.

It might run

It might run but I think the damage has been done. It will probably take a major rebuild to make it run right. That is what I think you should assume. Buyer beware!

Buy it.....it's just the Fuel Injection Pump...

If you run gasoline thru a diesel, the first thing that goes is the Injection Pump.....no lubricity in gasoline......happens all the time, some guy's wife or girlfriend thinks she's doing him a favor and fills it up.....

I worked in a Injection Calibration shop for awhile after I retired.....rebuilt many Bosch "P" type pumps for Dodge/Cummins....first whif of gasoline, and we voided warranty!! The pump in your Benz is a Bosch P Pump!!

either get a used Injection pump, pr have that one rebuilt at a FI shop....engine will be fine.....change fuel filters.....change oil while you're at it....do a good maintenance check, valve lash and stuff....while you look for/or wait for your IP to be finished....

Buy it....Buy it.....tell him it will collapse in a week or two, and that you are gonna do him a favor.....

gas in a diesel

Once I accidentaly filled up my Mitsubishi Fuso truck with gasoline. Luckily the truck was running while I was pumping. When I tried to leave the station it wouldnt go more than about two mph. I thought for sure I had gotten some diesel fuel with water in it.,but when I looked at my receipt it said gasoline. I drained the tank, changed the filters, put fresh diesel in her, and drove away. Ran great. That was over two years ago. If I had fueled up with gasoline with the engine off I would have been up to highway speeds before the gas got to the IP, and that would have fried it.Now I make it a point to leave any diesel running when fueling at a station. Just for the record, I was having a very hectic day , a hundred things on my mind and a cell phone up to my ear. It could happen to anyone, even a gear head like me.

my daughter filled up a half empty 240d with gas then took off for home (a four hour trip) and made it about half way. cracked head, scored cylinders.

it all depends on how long it ran and what the mixture was.

BEWARE!!!!!!!!. my friend bought a 240d from this guy and it turned out to be a disaster. we got it home and noticed that he had rigged it up to run the throttle off the air flap in the intake manifold and nothing was connected to the injection pump at all. this seller has several mercedes parked out on the street most are not worth what he sells them for. i would be heasitant, as he wont hesitate to screw you.

I went looking for my first Mercedes back in about 1981 ( think) and really loved the 123 series even then, but couldn't afford a new one.

Tried out a 1977 that had around 190,000 miles on it for a bargain price....someone had put gas in it, and when they dropped the gas tank, and drained the gasoline, the gasoline somehow caught on fire, and the car had had a car fire! The car was repaired though, but not in the greatest condition, so I passed on it.

Still it did run good at 80 mph when I took it out for a spin....it was on of those maple yellow colored ones, so popular in those days.

It's amazing how many of those old 240 and 300 W123 diesels are still running in the USA. They are almost indestructible little tanks

Thumbs up

Used IPs are cheap if that's the only damage... but I'd be curious of what's wrong internally since the Diesel lubes the cylinders too.
