Auto transmission weirdness
Does anyone have any idea what causes this. my auto transmission changes perfectly up through the gears, but when i lift off the throttle, it is as if the car is in neutral, the revs drop and in effect the car is coasting, this is like when you dont have enough fluid, but i have checked that, and it isn't flaring between gears, this is a new game for my transmission to play with me! it is an 82 240d auto

An EGR system leak?
I think that car has an EGR system simiar to my '83 300D. It is designed to disable the EGR at idle and full throttle and does so via the vacuum valves connected to the throttle linkage. If I understand how the transmission modulator vacuum works, if that system were to leak all vacuum when the throttle is set at idle, then you might see a problem similar to what you describe if you are moving at the time. You might check is that is what is happening using a vacuum gauge.
