Question Power Steering Bracket in 76 240D

I'm looking at possibly buying a 76 240D. 115 chassis. They tell me the main problem is that it needs a new power steering bracket. I haven't seen the vehicle yet, but I plan to tomorrow. I noticed in an earlier exchange the following comment from Palangi:

Check to make sure the 3 steering box bolts are tight. Frame here is a weak point.

Is this the same issue, or possibly a different one? And how expensive to fix? It seems that if it's just replacing a bracket, that shouldn't be too hard or expensive? Right?

That refers to 3 bolts which mount the steering box to the frame, accessable through the left front wheel well. It sounds like he may be referring to the PS pump mounting bracket or something, but you need to pin down what he is talking about. Broken bracket = hard to find wrecking yard part. Wallered out frame = you might be able to fix it with some really creative welding if you are lucky and no rust is involved. If the 3 bolts are broken off or missing, this could be real hard to fix.

bracket sounds like the bracket the pump attaches to. a lot less serious than the steering box on a rusty frame. the rusty frame is repairable but a lot more trouble. if it is a rusty frame be sure to get it welded by an excellent welder with frame repair experience.

i would get the car inspected by someone with benz experience.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with MB experience. I was going to try and get their MB mechanic's name and check with them. The vehicle supposedly has 136K on it, and the asking price is $1.5K. If the mileage is accurate, it would seem that the engine and tranny (4spd manual) is probably worth at least $1K. Or am I on the wrong track?

I don't want to get into a welding operation, but I think I can handle replacing a bracket...

Yup, its the power steering pump bracet. My 300d has been non op ever since the main bolt stripped out. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with it. I wish the pump were as conveniently located as the w126s and w123s. I think I might drill straight up through the bracket and use a peice of all thread to hold it down.

Well, I looked at it. The power steering unit was so caked in oil/ps fluid and road grit, I couldn't see if the bracket was broken or not. Clearly, something was going on there. Also, it appeared to be one of the most inaccessable parts on the engine to work on. (Pretty crowded access below.)
Anyway, I think I'm going to pass on it. It needs more body work than I'm ready to sign up for.
Also, I didn't realize that the 76 model had a 5 digit odometer. So it's hard to say whether it had 136K, 236K, or 536K. The carpet on the floor of the driver's side sorta said more than 136K.
Thanks for the help.

there are decent cars out there. you should be able to find a very nice 123 body diesel for 4 to 5k. with no major needs.

pay less and you will have to spend more to get it really nice.

if you do buy one with needs i would try for no rust and a sound motor. these two items are big ticket. everything else can be fixed without killing you.
