What are your RPM's at 30 mph?
My car only turns 1200 at 30mph and 1400 at 40 mph. This is the RPM reading to maintain this speed. If I accelerate of course they go up. This seems slow. Is my tranny shifting too soon or do I have a goofy tach? Or do your cars run about the same?

My auto 190E 2.5-16 is about 1000rpm in 4th at 30mph. As soon as a I accelerate any it changes down a gear though.
I don't think you have a problem. |

Thats perfectly normal, that very same gear can carry the car to over 120mph, so obviously its going to be only just above idle at 30-40mph.
Thats the beauty of diesels, they can chug along cruising at city speeds hundreds of rpm lower than a gas engine can. Makes them more efficient. Its where the extra *torque* comes into play. Diesels have a lot more of it available at lower rpms, a gas engine would sputter and die trying to move a car along at 1100-1200rpm/30-40mph.

If you mean your tach doesn't work, don't feel bad, my engine turns 0 rpms at any speed too. And I wasted about $130 trying to make it work, never did. Oh well.
