Hose from banjo bolt to switchover valve...

Hey, the hose from my banjo bolt over to the switchover valve is broken (see Bowden cable dust boot is partially burned......... for my original post with photos), nobody seems to have this cable available (including Phil) and I haven't asked the dealer yet or checked any junkyards...

But my questions is.... if I wanted to fix the hose and just buy some new hose from Napa or somewhere and plug the hose onto the banjo fitting and then plug the hose into the fitting for the switchover valve, could I do this? The hose right now is a very hard plastic, could I replace it with rubber? Does it matter what it's made of?

Thanks,
David

I used polyethylene tubing that I bought at the Home Depot for $1.97 (20 ft.). I hear it won't last that long, but mine has been on for five months with no problems.

I have some of these hose. PM me if you can not get it fixed up locally. You definitely want it there and working unless you are very familiar with mercedes diesels and what that hose does.

I wouldn't but a new one unless the one you have doesn't reach the banjo bolt.
Mine was broken when I bought the car nearly 2 years ago. To fix it I heated the line up with a lighter. Not too much just enought to make it soft. Then quickly stuck it onto the banjo bolt, and let it cool. Good as new. Has worked ever since.

It doesn't look like you want to repair that hose, its a thin wall rigid plastic that gets cracked in older cars. I replaced it with ruber vacuum hose and ran that way for several years. I ordered the correct hose from the dealer, it comes with a new banjo bolt fused on one end (it is heat welded). Phil should be able to get it but if you have a dealer nearby that may be quicker.
You definitely want/need that in place. It shouldnlt affect the rough shifting you mentioned in the other thread however. That's likely to be the result of a vaccum problem. At some point in time its necessary to bit the bullet and replace all the rubber elbows and vacuum tees and fittings under the hood, and sometimes even a hose or two.
I would also look under the cover for the EGR control valve that sits amid the top of the valve cover, a leak there affects trans shifting.
It looks like that car has a rebuilt transmission in it, judging from the brite red flex cover on the control cable

I just called the dealer and they said they have the hose for $3.50 per meter and that I would just plug the banjo bolt into it. Do you think this would be fine or should I make sure and get one that comes with the banjo bolt already fused on? dieseldiehard, do you remember how much the hose you got from the dealer cost and what the hose was called by them, it seemed the guy didn't really understand what I was talking about on the phone? Also, Phil told me he doesn't have it.

Also, no rebuilt transmission, I just replaced the kickdown cable, which is why it has a red rubber cover.

The hard shifts seemed to be caused by this banjo bolt hose coming out. Once I plugged it back in, everything was basically back to normal. I know from the descriptions of what this hose does that doesn't really make sense, but yeah, plugging the hose back in fixed my problem.

Thanks,
David

Edit, also I do plan to change some vacuum t's and I have no EGR.

It is possible that they are quoting you the wrong type of line. The banjo bolt line should come with a new banjo installed. Mine cracked at the banjo, but I just used a rubber vacuum "T" to splice it, and used the third leg of the "T" to hook up my boost gauge.

Ok, called the dealer earlier and finally got someone to say that there are a few lines with banjo fittings on them, to bring mine in to match it up... when I went out there the guy I spoke too wasn't there and the people in the part dept. had no clue what I was showing them....

One of them tried insisting it's vacuum hose to which I told him it's for sure not. I told him it's the line that goes from the switchover valve to the banjo bolt. He couldn't understand....

How should I explain to him which line it is, which schematic to look at???

The Banjo bolt screws into the intake manifold, so if I tell him that, should that be enough for him to figure it out?

Thanks,
David

I told you what it was before...turbo boost signal hose.

Any fuel injection or emissions hose will work with correct i/d...just secure each end with a hose clamp....it has to stand up to a maximum of 12 psi if the system is factory stock...or occasional 14 to 15 psi if you tweeked the i/p.

Unlikely the guys at the parts department are old enough to know anything about your Mercedes....they all work on late models clients vehicles...who can afford to go there.

Phil does have it! I had to order one two weeks ago. It was like $8 and some change. At least he had it for my 85 300D. It had about a 30 inch hose on it. Tomorrow i will see if I still have the bag with the part number.

dkveuro, I know you told me what it was before, but unfortunately the person at the parts dept. at the dealer didn't know what the hell I was talking about.

Wodnek, weird, Phil told me he didn't have it.

It's all fine anyways, the dealer finally figured out what it is and I ordered it today and it'll be here probably Monday or Tuesday. The price wasn't too bad ($16 for the line and $5 for the rubber hose at the end.). They charged me for the rubber hose without asking me if I even wanted it, oh well, it'll fit tighter, so whatever.

Thanks everyone, problem solved.

David
