help with fog lights

Ok, so I got a 92 300D, the fog lights right beside the headlights will not come on. I checked the bulbs and they are good (lit when tested directly to a battery). Is there a fuse that controls these? I dont even know where the fuse panel is. ANY help would be appreciated.

I would check the fuses first. I can't help on the location, but the owners manual should tell where the panel is. Or someone here I'm sure can.

Sorry but I gotta ask... do you know how they turn on? Next check the fuse. After that see if the wires/connections are good. Have they worked before, and if so what changed so that they not are not functioning?

The fuse panel is under the hood, up against the base of the windshield on the driver's side, I believe. There are fuses that prevent electrical fires if there is a short ciruit in the fog lamp circuits. I am not sure about the fog lamps but normally they are on a circuit with other items, one fog light per fuse.

If both are out and nothing else is out it may not be the fuse, but you should check the fuses first. These are those funky European auto fuses and when you check them you should also spin them in their seats to try to break up any oxidation between the fuse conductor and the copper in the fuse box holders.

I also believe there is a relay that responds to the switch in the dash to turn the fog lights on, but I have no documentation to check this right now. If that is the case the relay may also be bad. Someone else will chime in about this question though.

Good luck and I hope this helps. Jim

Ok, so I guess I am just totally not up to date on the German way of doing things, but other than turning on the lights, I really dont have a clue. Is there another switch for them somewhere I am missing?

By the way, I dont have an owners manual, car didnt come with one, I am ordering one from MBUSA tomorrow.

Also, neither are working, and the only other thing I can find that doesnt work is the cruise control. But as in the previous post, I very well may not have any clue how to get them to turn on. But I just cant find any other switches.

To turn on the fogs usually you have to turn on the headlights on low beam and then pull the headlight switch out. If you then turn on the high beam the fogs automatically turn off.

Ok so I did try to pull on the switch, but I didnt want to break it. My luck I would just rip the knob off. Ok, I am gonna go try that and probably come back and report how stupid I am.

No need for self whipping here- we all learn something from each other. Just keep asking like you did in civilized tones and the world of fine MB diesel motoring will be laid at your feet...lol

Okay, Assume your fog lights are not okay, are there any other options for replacement? I looked up the price for these things and they cost around 100 bucks per light!

Pull out two detents on your '92 and the center of the switch will light up, as will the rear fog lamp in the LH cluster.

Not always correct. Up to 1985 this holds true for most models. 1986 on, the fogs can be turned on with just the parking lights on. The fogs will also stay on with the brights on.

I plan on chaning my early models so the switch works like the later ones...especially on the SEC.

fogs usually do not turn off at high beam.... but yes, pull on the switch towards you when in headlight mode only to trun on the fogs. low or high beam, the fogs are suppose to stay on.
