Lightbulb Glow Plugs, just some comments....

G'mornin' Folks,

I got my monthly parts stash on Wednesday, so I did my Glow Plugs yesterday......wow, what a difference in starting!!

Don't get me wrong, I was not complaining about my '85 300D-T starting to begin with. It always started, and kattered, klanked, and shook for a bit, but always smoothed out after a minute or so.

I got this car a few months ago, and changed them as part of my "new, to me" initial service...and because winter is upon us!!

But after I installed the new glow plugs, it fires right up and runs relatively smoothly....noticed a big difference.

Regarding the job.....it was an easy repair....however, I now remember why I used to cuss the Krauts when I was working on the big ship's diesels. Like, why did they put the *&%#$^&(* oil filter there!!! I used the reamer, that I had asked about in another thread....got some carbon/soot out of each so I think the reamer was a worthwhile investment.

The only thing that could be better, in my opinion, is for Bosch to include the little nut that holds the wire to the plug...with each new plug...I didn't lose any, but I dropped them more than once trying to thread them back on....and I usually manage to loose little stuff like those, once in awhile...one was kinda hard to find!!!!

All said and done.....this is a small repair that reaps a big dividend in starting ease!!!

almost all of my diesel experience is on larger engines, and we used Jacket Water (cooling water) Heaters....and as our FI nozzles were also water cooled....we heated that "Nozzle" cooling water as well.

My old German Eicher tractor does not have glow plugs either...but does have a cold start fuel pump that gives a squirt of fuel just in front of the intake valve!!

I learned years ago, that when a pin type glow plug system gets tired, just replace ALL the glow plugs at the same time. I always had the same results as you when I did this. In those days, however, I could buy the plugs for about $3 a piece. With them now at $10 or so, it's a little harder for some people to just bite the bullet and do it.
