What's this?

What's this big white thingie?

Found in my 87 300D under the back seat, driver's side.

Has only a 3pin electrical connection (which for me wasn't connected). Plugged it in, nothing happened. (except for a typhoon in Japan).

No part numbers on it. What is it?

The only thing routed down that side is vacuum tubing as far as I remember. Some kind of electrical trunk release mechanism?

Gerry picked a poor spot for a stash can.

It is mounted. Doesn't have any vaccum tube ports. Only has a 3 wire connector and the wires go back towards the front. (not towards the back, so I think trunk mechanism is out.) There are vaccum lines down there next to it (for the back seat head restraints).

I thought maybe something for the power seat mechanism, but my seat works, and this thing is only on the driver's side - not the passengers side which has the same features.

I only have a couple more hours before curiousity catches up with me, and I smash it open with a large rock caveman style.

Well, if it aint a sump pump take that out and install one. Just spent an entire weekend fixing a foot long hole right in front of that thing. Learned 3 trades in one; sheet metal, fiberglass and marine bondo.

Could it be some cheapie sub woofer type thing or alarm gizmo?

Ok, seriously guys...

It's a sensor that triggers the alarm when the car gets towed. Many proved to be faulty and MB phased them out by the end of 1987.

wow. thanks a ton. I nominate you for poster of the day. that's one part that ain't going back in the car when I put it back together.

On an unrelated note, does anyone want to buy a sensor that triggers the alarm when your car gets towed? (It may be faulty).
