Observation - Mahle Fuel Filter

I have been buying parts and maintenance items for my newly acquired 300SD. I managed to order Mahle main fuel filters from two different vendors.

One of the vendors supplied the filters with a new O-ring taped to the top of each box. The other supplied no O-ring.

I took a quick look last night in the FSM and it does show an O-ring in the filter assembly, on the filter mounting bolt.

Do you guys change this O-ring with every filter? Once in a blue moon?

There is some diesel on the bottom of the currently installed filter...I wonder if it is coming from an old, worn out O-ring? Is that the common source of diesel leaks at the main filter housing?

tia,

Tim

All filters I have bought have included the O-ring, I put on a new O-ring with each new filter. Congratulations on getting your 3000SD you are now hooked. Good luck and God bless you and your new car.

I had to get the internal rubber O ring from the dealer. And the other copper O ring on the bolt had to come from the dealer. I found the housing scared at the top bolt from someone having an aluminum washer installed inststead of copper. I have a small leak there. I just work the bolt, loosening and retighten. I haven't found any washers with the filters yet, but I'll look from now on. Those washers were about $10 at the stealership.

Thanks for the replies. I pulled the filter off and as I suspected, there was no O-ring on the bolt.

That explains the diesel soaked hood pad

Glad it wasn't something serious...but that pad had taken a beating. The diesel is about to dissolve it. I'll have to try to soak some paper towels to dry it out. Rubbing is a no-no. Pad comes apart

Depends on the bolt you have, early versions used copper crush washers.

I think all versions had at least one o-ring. The later version had 2 different sized o-rings.

Nope my early 82 uses all crush washers. If my memory serves me there are like 3-5 versions, ask your local dealer.
