Door lock - Vacuum pump problem or not?

hi all -

i've got an '85 300sd. one of the problems im trying to solve is a lock issue. i think, unfortunately, that its the vacuum pump, but i thought id ask. i cant get the drivers side door lock to operate properly. i cannot lock it or unlock it with the key, nor can i even lock it with the door open. the only way to lock the door is to close it, and then press down the lock button. because of this, im unable to tell if the auto lock works for the rest of the car, as i cant actually unlock the door with the key.

i apologize if this has been answered somewhere else, but i havent been able to find a thread that deals with this exact same problem yet.

secondarily, im facing the dreaded rear windshield delamination. what does a rear windwhield for a 300sd usually run? i know its devastatingly expensive, but im wondering just how devastating that might be...

Door Lock & Location

Does the key mechanically lock the door or does it just activate the vacuum system????????????/ Jim

currently the key doesnt do anything on the drivers side. it neither activates the vacuum system nor unlocks the door.

Could Be Mechanical

Your key should lock and unlock the door... It does on mine and I don't have the vacuum hooked up right now to the doors... Try both front doors and see if the key will work in the passengers side... But it sounds like you have a problem with the door lock first... First you need to take it apart and lube it and see if you can get the key to work first... then check the vacuum pump to see if you are getting anything and if you are then test the vacuum that feeds the front door... The lock definately is one of your first problems... The vacuum is second.... If you end up needing a pump just send me the part numbers and I will give you a good price... Jim

thanks so much jim. i think it is mechanical - the trunk is automatically unlocked when opening the passenger side door.

Your system is mechanical and electrical on both front doors. Your trunk pump is vacuum and pressure ... lock, unlock. You should have a 1 to 3 connector under the front passenger carpet. Apply vacuum and pressure to the driver's door line and see what happens. This should tell you if you have to pull the inner door panel. Also check the lines at the door/body flex point. I'd bet you have a bad driver's door lock. I had the same problem with a 83 380 SEL and both the lock and the pump were shot.

It sounds like the barrel of the lock is dirty to me. I had trouble with my key unlocking the door. I took the lock apart and found a bunch of lint in there. I cleaned it all out, and it was like new.

It does'n't sound vacuum realated. You have to turn the driver's key all the way to the lock/unlock position for the vac system to make the other ones work.
