How do you get diesel smell off your hands?
 

Just wondered, as nothing I have ever tried has managed to get rid of the smell. It usually goes overnight.

Soap, water, and time is the second best I can do.

Best I can do is not get it there in the first place.

I've never had a problem with diesel. Hand cleaner usually takes care of it. It's when I work w/ gasoline that I get a nice stink on for a few days. Any suggestions there?

Just get your hands wet and sprinkle some baking powder on them scrub it around and rinse. There are all sort of hand cleaners available but this works well and is cheap as and odor cleanser with some mild cleaning capabilities.

I wear the blue nitrile gloves that are usually available at NAPA. They also keep the Coal Black diesel drain oil stain off your hands.:)
My Wife won't let me near her if my hands smell like fuel.

the best thing i have found for diesel, gasoline, kerosene, deet/insect repellant or anything else with petroleum in it, is to wash up real hard with some COLD water and a pumice bar. Then wash with warm water and Dr. Bronner's natural soap. Every time i use hot water to wash it seems to jsut intensify the smell. Dr. Bronner's is all natural vegetable glycerin soap and isnt strong enough to get the grime off so thats why i use a pumice bar. Works wonders.

I use a Zippo lighter. ;)

I am so glad I started using the blue gloves. No more scrubbing under the nails, no more smell, and they sort of keep your hands warmer when it is cold out. I highly recomend using them.

I bought some of those inexpensive latex gloves at Sam's Club and would use a pair whenever I would fill up. It really was worth it to avoid the diesel smell on my hands. The gloves weren't that expensive.

I too use the nitrile gloves whenever turning wrenches in greasy areas, I didn't in my younger days but over time have developed an intense allergic reaction to lighter oils such as ATF and fuels. (Stil lcant get away from my tinkering addictions though) If I'm doing drier work, such as tire rotations I just use leather work gloves to avoid the cuts and pinches etc.

As far as getting off the smell, well, if you know someone who has a pet skunk.....

there is a product called the wonder bar that is more or less stainless steel in the shape of a bar of soap, and i have used it forever to get any and all smells off my hands. just run cold water and wipe it all over your hands, works great and no chemicals.
