Diesel Lube Oil Extender question

A few weeks ago I picked up a 96oz jug of Power Service Diesel Lube Oil Extender at wally world for $8 on clearance. It is usually about $19. Two days ago I went by the clearance isle again and the last bottle was down to $5. I bought it.

Has anyone out there used this stuff? They recommend using about 1/2 quart per 8 quarts at oil change. It can also be used to top up inbetween oil changes.

It is supposed to replace the additive package that gets used up while you drive.

Extending oil changes is a hotly debated subject here you might know, especially if it involves using a high-grade synthetic to do so.

Oil formulations and additives aren't all compatible, although there is some merit to replenishing some of the oil's additive package to do so.

The problem is that depending on what oil and filter you're using, the condition and tune of your engine, what fuel you burn, and especially how you drive; the condition of your oil will be vastly different.

For example: If you're running a '90 300D in great tune, no toying with the ALDA or rack, use premium or a good synthetic, OEM filter or equivalent, don't run it too hard and typically drive 30minutes or further your oil shouldn't be getting much soot, much un-burned fuel, or much water/condensation.

If you're running a 240D that is pretty worn out, drive a lot of short trips, run it hard, smoke a lot and burn cheap fuel and oil, you're just the opposite.

The oil breakdown includes pollutants: acids/moisture/fuel/soot, some of which can be filtered out and others can be neutralized by the additive package, the DieselService product can help there. Too much additive however isn't always a good thing. Other issues such as viscosity breakdown can't be repaired, the oil is just shot. Moisture and fuel will pollute the fuel, long trips and a good starting engine will minimize it.

The effective life of the filter must also be considered, most who run extended drain intervals agree that a standard filter should be changed at standard intervals even if the oil isn't.

Some oil additives (ex: IMO Slick 50) can be harmful to your engine, consider that the breakdown temperature of PTFE is lower than the combustion temperature in the cylinder, so not knowing what is contained in the additive would eliminate it from my list. If you're not comfortable with what you're adding to your engine, don't.

Good oil and filters are relatively cheap maintenance.

Mercedes says never use additives.

They are all bunk.

If you want better oil, use Mobil 1.

Question

just for the sake of argument, I just went by a dealer and asked for oil recomendations for my 99 300d. I was told specifically to use Mobil 1 syn, which is great for my gasser, but do I dare put this in my diesel?

I'm currently running 15W40 Rotella, dino not synthetic, changed every 5,000 miles. This next change I'm planning on going to Mobile 1 5W40, changed every 5,000 miles.

The "on clearance, buy it" part of me got the better of me.

I was not actually planning on trying to run the oil longer, at least not without a baseline of oil analysis to start with and then periodic sampling while running.

I do 90% highway driving. I was doing 500 miles up on Sundays, 70 miles of in town driving, then 500 miles back down on Fridays. Now I am doing 150 miles down, 20 miles in town, 150 miles back up, plus maybe 20 miles in town on the weekends.

My 1987 300D seems to be running well and I'm usually down about 1/2 quart of oil at the end of 5,000 miles.

I was planning on using 1/2 quart at oil change and not topping up between oil changes. I had assumed that this was a cannot hurt item. It might not help, but was not likely to hurt. Now I am wondering.

Only if it's diesel rated, with a "Cx" rating. From previous discussions here, it was said Mobil 1 cannot handle as much soot as a standard or synthetic diesel-specific oil like Delvac or Rotella. That means you cannot extend the change interval, and you are just paying more for oil. And hopefully getting better lubrication, but that may be questionable too.

At the risk of opening this no-win debate, I'd say your driving makes you a possible candidate for extended changes if you so choose.

I have used: Mobil Delvac 1 (synthetic diesel oil), Amsoil heavy-duty diesel and marine and Amsoil 3000 series, and RedLine Diesel, have no complaint about any of them. I liked the Redline best, will go back to the cheaper Delvac 1 if I can find it locally.

Don't go cheap on filters.

Does anyone know what the filtration size is on a M-B filter for the 602 engine (bypass and full-flow sections)?

I saw Delvac synthetic at wally world last night. I think it was <$16 per gallon.

IF I do start streaching my oil changes (because the oil analysis says it is ok) I will most likely be running my oil through a 1 micron absolute filter assembly every couple of thousand of miles. (http://www.fryerpower.com/store/page6.html) I'm not planning on having it in there full time. I'm only planning on cleaning the oil every 3,000 miles or so. For the first few times I'm thinking of pulling a dirty sample, then filter the oil and pull another sample. I would like to see what changes.

Although rislone is far from "bunk" as ive had great experiance with that additive lubricating the lifters and making them quiet.

If you are using good HDEO oil to start with, you don't need to put in any additives, actually additives can play merry hell with existing oil chemistry thats why MB recommends against using them.
