Auto to manual Trans and all parts, is this a good deal?
I have found a guy that is selling a 240D trans with everything needed to convert a 300D over. Trans, shifter, linkages, pedal...
Would $400 shipped to my door reasonable?

If the transmission can be guaranteed good (Does not grind going into 2nd or 3rd) it is a good deal.
You will also need the driveshaft and flywheel. Remember that if you are planning to convert your 85 you will have problems finding a pilot bearing to fit the crankshaft. Last edited by ForcedInduction; 06-06-2008 at 02:11 PM. |

You will also need the proper cross member, can be found on auto 240D.
For the pilot bearing I just ground my bearing down a bit running a die grinder perpendicular to the race. Its not perfect but works.

the 85 has been stripped and is gone.
I was thinking about doing this on my 80 300D. is there any way that i could use my cruise after it has been converted? I was planning on having the Automatic drive shaft shortened, and i think the flywheel is included. if it is not though, could i get one from a junk yard?

well the guy just said that it includes the flywheel but the trans has not been tested.
hmm I am moving to houston, which has a better selection of MB's at junkyards (compared to my zero available in Arkansas) and am wondering if i can just rip this stuff off a 240d cheaper and get all the parts?

I picked mine up for about that price... delivered that's a great deal.
again, IF IF IF it's got good gears. be sure you get the flywheel, AND the bolts for the flywheel, don't worry about the pressure plate, cause more than likely you will want a new disc, plate, and throwout bearing. the guy who pulled mine, just cut the clutch lines... see if you can get the seller to use proper flare wrenches to seperate the lines, and see if you can get all the lines. more than likely you will need new shift bushings, they are cheap from the buy parts link above. go ahead and get the drive shaft from them if you can, but it will not help you. it will be too long. at least you can get it cut down... look over the 4 speed crossmember thread to get the right crossmember... and have fun!

I paid $90 for all - flywheel and clutch.
Testing is easy, put it in each gear and turn the shaft..... Not a good indicator of syncros but generally will do the trick.

The synchros are whats important. It may go into gear fine on the table but it won't last long if it clashes every time you shift gears.

All the parts!
I was searching for something else and found this. I'm the guy in question with the tranny. It comes with ALL the parts and, yes, I did use a flare wrench to remove the hard line from the clutch master. Nothing was cut and the only thing I don't have is the shift knob. Pedals, crossmember, speedo cable, reservoir, driveshaft , flywheel and hardware, blah blah blah. IT turns in all gears but as was stated that does not tell you anything about the syncros.

I thought flywheel bolts shouldn't be reused. Aren't they torque to yield? Or maybe they yield when removing because of the thread locking compound.

Just don't use an air impact/ratchet to install or remove them. |
