Oil vapor collector/intake/valve cover discussion

Dear Forum,

What is the point of the air intake being connected to the oil vapor trap?

It makes an oily mess and coat all the intake's inside (outside also) of a crumy crud (only worsened by the fact that the EGR valve also releases soot in the intake).

I guess the designers of the cars wanted the intake to be coated in oil to trap the soots coming from the exhaust. But is there another function to the valve cover plumbing going into the intake than that?

Could the oil vapors be just collected in the trap and channeled to the crankcase(after ablation of the EGR!)?

To prevent the hydrocarbons in the crank case fumes from reaching the atmosphere. Most of the 616 and 617 powered cars have an oil separator in the air filter assembly, or have a external oil separator. This way you are not wasting the oil mist that is in the vapors (it is returned to the crankcase) and do not get an oily build up.

Don't know. My '80 300SD engine did not have one either. I used an oil separator from an aircraft.

The oil separator is a centrifugal type with an inlet on the side, outlet on the top and oil drain on the bottom. I hooked the inlet to the valve cover, outlet to the air cleaner and hooked the drain to the stock oil return next to the turbo oil return. It has been working well so far...my intake is not oily at all.

I got the separator on ebay for around $30

I'm using an oil separator from an OM616 on my OM603. The oil return ties in with the oil drain tube from the turbo. Got mine on Ebay for $18. Works quite well.

I like your oil seperator setup. It is smaller than I was expecting, but what the heck do I know really.....
Now, about that air cleaner.........

The throttle linkage that I had to fabricate to use the turbo engine in the 79 240 body will not allow the use of the stock filter.

OK, you're off the hook for now.
I would love to see a pic of the throttle linkage fabrication sometimes. Was gonna have to do that on the '77... Maybe you could add pics of it to my 300D/240D thread.

That oil separator is remarkably small
I also like the fact that it is pretty far away from the valve cover giving the time to oil to actually decante

What were the specs (models, flow etc.) on bgkasts and forcedinduction's setup in this thread:

Crankcase ventilation/Oil Separator Mod

Is that clear tubing still holding up? Any recommendations since install?

I don't have any specs for mine, but it seems to be working fine still. The clear tubing is a bit harder than it used to be, but is holding up fine.

Assuming there is so little oil it isnt worth catching, correct?
-Most people probably have oil leaks 3 times more severe.
