60x series of Engines

Since the 616 and 617 are so well covered here, I think the 60x needs some love.

I'm kinda lost as to the naming system. I always thought the 602 was a 4cylinder, 603 a 4cylinder, and 607 a six... Then I come to realise my car has a 602 - with 5 cylinders. Am I missing an artical somewhere?

601 = 4 cyl, 8 valve (found in 190D's)
602 = 5 cyl, 10 valve (found in 190D 2.5 and 300D 2.5)
603 = 6 cyl, 12 valve (found in 87 300D, 86-87 300SDL, and the "rod bender" in the 90-94 350SDL/300SD/S350D)
606 = 6 cyl, 24 valve (found in 95-99 E300D)

I believe there were 604 and 605 engines made with 4 and 5 cylinders with 16 and 20 valves respectively, but they were never imported to the US (at least in MB cars).

Just to clear it up, not all 603's are the same... My 1987 603 is a 3 liter engine. The 603's in the 90-94 cars are 3.5 liter, I think. They cast them with larger bore cylinders without changing anything else. The extra power/torque produced tends to be more than the rods can handle over time --> rod benders.

Also, the OM602, 605, and 606 were all available in both turbo and non-turbo versions.

Good stuff guys, good stuff.

Is there any other faults with these engines besides the entire "Rod bender" thing?

This is my first venture into Diesel - so much to learn.

Early 3.0L had head failure issues.

Isn't the 606 a V configuration? I thought the 603s were the only inline 6's.

nope.. just had dual cams i belive or just more valves per cylinder

ive heard that if you take the crank from a 3.5 603 and put it in a 3.0 603 you'll get a stroker 603 3.2 l or something

Another question...60x compatability

Folks,

I may be in the rod bender situation with my '93 603... Two options are the 603 3.0 L from the 86-87 vintage. Another option is the 606 either turbo or not.

Any speculation on the compatibility of the 3.0 603 or the 606 with my transmission? I have a 93 300 SD with a 4 speed automatic. I expect the earlier 603 would be a pretty direct bolt up. Any ideas on the 606. I think someone earlier mentioned either a Euro 140 with a 606 installed.

Any other questions out there on how compatible the bolt up is to different trannies?

Thanks,
Chuck
