Fuel fired coolant heater
Has anyone ever rigged up one of the factory installed preheaters (I think optional on the gas models) on a 617 diesel? I am looking to buy a preheater of some brand, but I'm cheap, so I was thinking it might be possible to retrofit one of these?

Methinks it's highly unlikely that a heater designed to run on gasoline will run on diesel.

I have a Webasto heater (Diesel) in my 300CD which I transplanted from my '77 300D. I have used it for a few winters here in Canada. At -30C it will bring it from cold to almost operating temperature in about 30 minutes.
It's a very efficient little machine, easy to install. The only drawback is the cost around $1200-$1500 new. I bought this one lightly used for $500. It's never required any maintenance and has never let me down. Definitely worth it if you have a spare chunk of cash.

This idea (coolant heaters) seems superior to letting the car idle all night.

I was just looking at the mercedesssource website and they have one of the euro installed gas powered coolant heater. It says for parts only, but I wondered if this might be a good opportunity? Does anyone know if there is parts available for a unit like this? I thought I might make a seperate "fuel cell" for gasoline for the heater like someone on the list who was using kerosene on his biodiesel/wvo car. Just a thought
