'98 E300 Fuel Filter - Came with 2 o-rings but I only used 1
I'm chasing both leaking fuel and performance problems so I decided to first replace the fuel filters as that might help explain the performance issues I had been encountering...so I bought the spin-on filter from the dealer and it came with 2 o-rings, one larger than the other. The banjo bolt had one groove in which an old o-ring was installed and I replaced it with the larger of the two I got with my filter but I could not see the point of the second o-ring. In fact I don't think there was one in there before so I am wondering if maybe there was an older design of the banjo bolt that accomidated two o-rings where the new version only uses 1? I put it together using the one ring and everything seems fine but the EPC and WIS do show the two rings, just not clearly enough to know where the second one should go. The only place it could go is over the threads on the bolt but that makes no sense to me.
Anyone have any insight into this?

Yeah I've run into the same thing and did what you did. I think my ex-87 300D used two o-rings so the other o-ring is probably for other models like this one.

I just did this 2wks ago. My '99 has only 1 o-ring while my dad's '95 needed the 2 different sized ones. The '95 has a lower spot on the bolt for the small o-ring...

When I first bought the 98 and stocked up on filters I thought the additional O ring was for the pre-filter (inline filter) but its the wrong size for that. Can that additional O ring fit anything else...ie. fuel line, shut off valve? Or should I just through them away?

Thanks guys, good to know you have made me feel I did it right.
I did the pre-filter too but did buy the proper o-ring for it. I find it amazing still that they sell that filter without the o-ring! I have to believe this leads to so many problems for tech and DIYers that don't know it needs to be replaced. Now I have to just drill out that %^$%%^%*& torx bolt I just stripped the head of on the shutoff valve. And it is one I just had out early last year when I last changed the o-ring!

when I did mine about 8 months ago. When I put them back in I was careful I did not overtighten them. Now in hind sight I should have replaced them with new ones to be sure I could get them out again. Good Luck!

Not to get off on a tangent but I'm planning on replacing the ones at the injector pump lines over the next week or so ('95 E300). Does anyone have any pics or an exploded view of where the rings and seals go? tia

Delivery valves. 210.020 '95 OM606. I think you might need the splined socket for those valves?

I'm assuming it is talking about 98 and 104 in the pic. They are not listed on the breakout description.
Thanks for the heads up on the splined socket. I will get one coming.

It's a Hazet socket but the lowest price I found was from MB ironically. Hazet's number is 4556 and the MB part # is W617 589 01 09 00 and as I recall it was somewhere around $35 a couple of months ago.

Yep, those are the seals, the o-rings are about $0.39 each and the crush washers are about a buck a piece. I have heard it is not necessary to change the crush washers but I plan to do it anyway.
