Instrument Lights on 87 300TD

I just purchased an 87 300TD, which is an amazing wagon compared to my 80

Driving it home tonight I found that none of the interior instrument lights work. I checked that the fuse is getting power and putting it out (it is), but beyond that I don't really know where to start. I'm a VW man, who has recently started getting into Mercedes, don't know if that means much, but it shows I'm a noob

Other than those instrument lights, the only other electrical problem I've found so far is the front interior light does not come on when I open either of the front doors (though I can switch it on manually). Maybe this is related, but I'm thinking not.

The dimmer rheostat located in the instrument cluster may be at fault. Somewhere in the forum is a DYI on how to repair this item. The search function should be able to bring it up.

on the door lights, do you have the dome light switch set forward? I believe WV has the same switch arrangement, so you may already be familiar with it, but just thought I would mention it.
My 79 lights do not come on when the doors are opened, and I have put the switch in every position there is, no luck.

dome lights

The dome light in the benz is a little different than the golf in that it has a fourth setting for a map light. I have the switch set to the right position for the light to come on when I open the front doors, but it doesn't work.

The icon next to this position is a half circle with a line through it. I have no idea what they're trying to indicate with that image, but it must mean "turn light on when the doors are open" to somebody.
