More elec. fun ... dome light switch bad?

... just as I'm about to crack out my CC unit and play around with it, another mini-problem pops up. Front dome light went out recently, kind of would flicker, but mostly dead. Replaced the bulb today, no fix (this after waiting in Pep Boys' line for half an hour). If I jiggle the switch at either the "on" setting or the "door-open on" setting (with door ajar, of course), I sometimes get the light. The reading light is the same deal -- will come on only when the switch is jiggled, and sometimes goes back out anyway. So I feel that the trouble is originating at the switch. Any chance I can fix this by cleaning contacts somewhere or something of that nature? Or is my whole unit likely shot and I should replace it with a nice E-bay used one?

Sounds to me like you are having a problem grounding the switch(s) to the frame of the car. Could be a rust issue. Disconnect the battery. If you have a W123 or W126 pull each switch out with a pair of pliers. Clean down to bare metal the hole the switch inserts into. Wire brush the switch body itself. Make sure to remove any corrosion at points of contact at the base of the switch(s). Reinsert each switch then reconnect the battery. Problem solved, cool. If not, one or more of the switches may have an internal failure. (worn out). Replace the switch(s).
If you have a W124 disconnect the battery. Unscrew each switch and clean down to bare metal the hole the mounting screw is attached to.
Reinstall the switch(s). Reconnect the battery. Problem solved, good job.
If still a problem, you may have to inspect the condition of the wire attached to each switch. They may have been stretched or inproperly spliced by a previous owner.

That is good info for sure. Now, if this fixes her car, does she have to add that to her signature........

Pardon my ignorance, but do you mean the switches that connect right into the back of the domelight/sunroof unit? I have a 124 (should have mentioned that in my first post), but the switches pop right off and I don't see the screws. I'm sitting at work so I can't investigate right now, but I'll have to look more closely. What's the best substance to clean them with?
