Thermostat brands...
...anyone have a qualitative reason to use a $37 Stant thermostat instead of a $13 Behr one? I've always used the Stant ones on my old domestics, but those are cheap. It seems crazy to me to spend that much for a t-stat The car is an '83 240D....

Thermostat
Yes, it would be crazy, especially since Behr is the Origanal Manufacturer for Mercedes.

All the Stant's I have bought were all Behr's, I think I only paid $10 for them. I know a few years ago they started making them in China

I rejected a thermostat from Carquest because it was made in China. I've seen too much Chinese stuff that looked OK, but then broke down soon after installation. I'd hate to have to deal with a blown head gasket because some nameless production engineer in Shanghai figured he could save a few Yuan by using junk components. A few bucks extra for a good thermostat from a Worldpac dealer is well worth it.

Thanks for the input, guys.
OldPokey- my first instinct was in line with your comments. I don't buy cheap parts to be cheap, I buy them when there's no advantage to buying the more expensive ones. However, I'm not talking about a couple of bucks- more like a 200% markup on a really simple and usually inexpensive component. I was hoping that someone on the board has more than conjecture or instinct on which to base my decision- personal experience with using one of the cheapos or empirical data comparing the materials/craftsmanship/durability, etc... The facts are out there, but where are they?

Thermostats
I don't get it Nate. You asked a question. people answered it. Behr is good enough for Mercedes to have chosen them as an original supplier for over 50 years. What the heck can Stant do that is $24.00 better? It's just a thermostat. They open, They close.

This comes up every few months when someone has a cooling issue. I believe the issue is typically that the thermostat won't close down to let the car heat up.
There was a bad production run of one of the typical thermostat brands. A search here should find the information - "bad thermostat". Ken300D

Wahler Thermostat from MercedesShop.com?
Okay, wait a minute...
I just ordered a thermostat kit for my 350SD from right here at MercedesShop.com and it is a Wahler brand - should I be concerned about this brand? It seems it would be right since it came from MercedesShop.com... It is made in Germany, I know that for sure - and I paid $24.50 for it.

From what ive seen at my work. Behr thermostats are now made in china, i pulled enough parts to know whats made where.
wahler is a sister, cousin, brother however you want to see it, company to behr and seems to still make them in germany. Some behr radiators are also made in south africa while i see "made in germany" stamped on nissens radiators.

I have three friends who have had Wahler thermostats fail in the closed position, including one in my VW. They were all made of brass - the bridge broke loose from the disc causing them to jam. New ones might be improved, but I would stick to ones made of stronger stainless steel.

The OM 616 sold here have BEHR India radiators with locally made WTI brass thermostat, mine lasted for 7 years and out of paranoia, I replaced it with a new one, so far countless number of OM616 engines sold here, few have suffered from thermostat problems.

Wahler and Behr were both oem to mercedes. You can still get German made in either. The dealer price for a mercedes stamped wahler is 23.00 us. If in a pinch and forced to pay more than 18 bucks, I would head straight over to the mercedes parts counter for my once a year appearance... I would NEVER use anything but a german made thermostat in these cars period.
