85 300TD no forward gears
Hi, the other day my dad was driving his car to the doctors and he came to a stopsign and went to take off. the car would not go forward but it would go in reverse just fine. We had AAA tow it back to our house. When it got back to our house we checked the transmission fluid and it is just fine. I looked around on here an bit. From what I read on here that the problem might be the B-2 piston. Is there anyway to check the B-2 piston to see if it is broken?

Could be the B2 piston or the B2 band. Had to lower the tranny a bit to get to the B2 piston cover. If your piston is intact then your band is broken.

How hard is it to replace the B2 piston? Also do you have to take apart the transmission to get to the B2 band?

B2 piston replacement in situ depends a lot on your skill/frustration level, but I would say it's a solid DIY project. You cannot replace the band without pulling the tranny apart.

I looked around on how to get the B2 piston fixed. It looks like that me and my dad should be able to do it ourselves. I hope the piston is bad not the band. Now the only problem is that we have to clean the garage out. So we aren't working in the driveway.

Hate to bring up a old thread. But I am try to do the b2 piston and I am wondering do I have to take the drive-shaft off the back of the tranmission at the rubber disk. Because it looks like the tranny won't drop low enough to get at the b2 piston with the driveshaft on.

Last night I unbolted the driveshaft and main bearing. and the transmission still doesn't seem to be low enough to work on the b2. I really need to get this done because its my dad's daily driver. Heres a pic of how low the tranny is right now.

I have read that besides lowering the Transmission folks have used some leverage by way of a 2x4 to pry the the tail of the Transmission towards the Drivers side to gain more room. When I was asking about how to do it I ask if removing the Motor Mount Bolts would help. Folks said no. I have never tried it yet but I think trying to bend the Motor Mounts upwards (to lower the Transmission) or to the side while they are still bolted in only makes it more difficult

I just got the piston out a little while ago. The piston cracked into two. Now I just have to order the parts and get it back together and see if it drives.

I found out a couple of things while taking out the piston. You get more room if you loosen the main bearing on the drive shaft. Also if the piston breaks in half like it did on ours, you may have to tap on the cap to get the cap to loosen up so you can take out the circle clip. I found another guide on doing the piston but it doesn't have any pics.
