Nailing at idle......OM606
hi, I have a 99 E300D ,so far this yr replaced fuel ,lines o-rings, glowplugs, rear bearings(pita)
thanks to all the helpful posters! Now to the problem I created , ran some diesel purge thanks to helpful pictures in forum did wonders , but still had a small bit of nailing at idle , so pulled injectors took to shop only to find out everythings perfect with them and the shop didnt charge me which was nice!(kinda was hoping for one bad one to cure noise at idle) well went to dealer picked up some seal rings to install injectors back , did this started it and loud now thought ok air in system give it the old italian tune up on highway will clear this up, it didnt now ,at idle its loud ,what could i have done wrong it has power just idling nailing or knocking sound like truck ! any help would be greatly appreciated |

Hot or cold noisy idle problem?? My 240D sounds like a Vickers WWI machine gun when cold. Nailing disapears when it warms up.

Did you get the seats for the injectors out the way you should?

the seal rings came out easy just put magnetic reach out they came bought new ones and dropped them in ,made sure they were facing proper way!

can injectors test good and still have a problem ,has anybody had this occur ????????

I have mentioned before how sensitive the fuel system appears to be on these cars. My guess is that you introduced a fuel or compression leak during the installation of your injectors. You may want to pop the injector cover off and inspect for fuel leaks. If you fill the injector holes with water you can also see if you have any compression leaks (you'll see bubbles around the injector that's leaking compression). The injectors do need quite a bit of torque to seat properly.

What about enough torque to prevent a compression leak at the injectors?
Those injectors have to be tight, real tight.

diesel addict , I think i will try your advice poor some water and see if it bubbles up never thought of that, in alldata it says 40nm torque,but in post i read of diesel giants it says 80nm, could it be the 99 dont require as much torque i will give it a try tomm. thanks for your thoughts on the subject guys, yeah I also agree diesel addict 606 fussy fuel system, must be because no primary fuel pump and self priming nature of this beast!

I would determine the correct torque before cranking on them at possibly double torque. Its aluminum guys.

I don't use a torque wrench on injectors. A strong but gradual one-arm pull on a 1-foot ratchet is all that's needed.

well took to bosch shop, they took out injectors and re tested everything checked out put back same noise , they then re did my delivery vales and changed them still same noise and pocket 700 bucks lighter, now they ask how much further i wanna go !@#$%^^%$#@#$ atleast i know it wasnt something Ive done to create this!

In another thread I mentioned that now I have knocking at idle, especially when cold, after doing the delivery valves, though I'm getting the feeling that the knock is very slowly going away as I drive the car more. That's why I said that the fuel system on these cars appears to be very sensitive. Maybe you just need to load up on some injector cleaner and drive the crap out of your car. There may be nothing wrong with the injectors, but you may have some carbon buildup in the prechambers that needs to work its way out.

ITS REALLY AMAZING, how sensitive there fuel system is, the shop also thinks what im hearing is fuel knock they they want to see if they can make it travel by swapping around injectors , FYI one injector cost 350 plus tax on the 98-99 going to buy some bozio nozzles! from dieselgiant just to feel better

well my 86 sdl has a loud knock at idle also.when cold you don't notice it as they are all knocking,but once it starts to get warm it settles down to just one.i've cracked inj lines and have isolated it to number 3,i've changed delivery valve seal,swapped inj's with other cyl's.been told by someone on here that number 3 is the worst for scoring pistons and that that is probably what i'm hearing.i do find this hard to swallow as once off idle say 8-900 rpm's it's quiet.i also have an 82 gmc suburban with a 6.2 and it has a LOUD knock on one cyl but it's been doing it since the engine was put in,it now has almost 100,000 miles.so the knock evidently doesn't bother the engine,just the driver.at least it's only one cyl.unlike a mid 90's powerstroke ford which knocks on all 8.

yeah the knock bugs the **** out of me, but nothing beats the first diesel I had which was total lemon ,1981 cmc pick up which was a converted oldsmobile engine to diesel what a peice of crap it was heads cylinders knocks dont even think about starting it in winter but it was amazing on fuel but needed mechanic to live in back off it to keep it going lol
