1987 OM602turbo into 1987 W124 300TDturbo?

Bought a 1987 300TD with a cracked head that was already off the car. Plans to put a new head on it have been postoned due to cost to do a correct job by the time you add in the vacuum pump, the timing chain etc.

Been watching a 190D with a turbo engine on Craigslist. It is at $500 OBO. Does this car which I think is a W201 chassis have an OM602 turbo engine?

Will it readily swap into the W124 wagon? Is it also true that the OM602 engines do not have the tendency to ever crack a cylinder head? Are they known to blow or have leaking head gaskets? Is there anything that I should look for with this car and engine?

I don't see why is couldn't be done, assuming you have the donor chassis to pull all the little misc. parts from, during the process. Not sure if the tach will swap over from a 201 to 124 cluster.

The timing chain I believe is the only problem with the 602, and the problem is much less widespread than the cracked heads on the 603. It's a real good engine. I've seen plenty of members or other people who have 300k+ on the 602. I've never had an engine related problem on my 602, it just keeps clacking the miles away.

You still do have to watch the temp though, it still has the same kind of alloy head as the 603, and is prone to warpage if severely overheated due to the different thermal expansion rates of iron and aluminum. Not as bulletproof as the 617, but much more refined and fuel efficient.

I think I will give this lady who has the car a call. I can get the car and do the swap and then part the rest of it out.

OK, This lady tells me it is a Euro car. I don't have the VIN so I don't know.

So I will ask here. Were there any 190D turbodiesels brought into the US in 1987? She says this is a 5 cylinder so it is an OM602 turbo. I know I could search around, but I am on dial up at home again so it is much easier to just ask.

Yes, 1987 was the only year for that body and engine combo (I'm pretty sure for anywhere).

Are you sure it's a turbo? Almost all euros tend to be non-turbo, even in 87.

The current owner said she called Mercedes US and they told her it was a Euro model. She does not seem to knowledgable so I don't believe anything until I see the car. She was fairly emphatic that it is a turbo.

Curious what has happened on this car.
