Welp, another day, another issue fixed. Since I bought the car the door locks have not worked. Car shut off OK, though.
Mityvac on yellow/gray line to vac reservoir held vac after the usual million pumps. Would not hold vac on yellow line to door lock valve. Removed and checked valve operation, which was fine. So, checked vac at yellow/red from valve = holds vac Checked vac at yellow/green = won't hold vac To make a long story short, checking at floor of passenger side, found line to trunk lock wouldn't hold vacuum. Removed assy., and you can see what I found. Outer diaphram had a tear in it. Removed the one from my old '77 300D and it was fine. Installed it and Wholla, I have door locks!! I didn't know that you can open the trunk when the doors are unlocked (heck, I've always been a wagon guy) First time since 1979 that I have had a vehicle with a trunk, and man I love having a trunk!! Very convenient..... This thread is kind of my 240 blog, so just wanted to add to the story. I simply love this little car!

Congrats on the new car.
Interior color is called "Henna", or that is what I was told by the dealer when I had my 80, 240D in the same color combination. I have a driver door pocket in that color, that I bought new for the 80 240D, and never installed. Been in my garage since 1991. Dave

Today was first oil change since I got the car. Found quart of 10W30 behind right headlight, so no telling what was in it. Wanted to get valves adjusted and new v.c. gasket before changing oil.
Oil filter cannister sure is easier to get the top off of in a 240D vs 300D or TD. Oil pan drain plug did not have a washer on it either. Installed Mahle filter and Rotella 15W40. Didn't really overfill, but it has max capacity oil. Looks like leak at bottom of oil filter housing, but I couldn't get my hex socket and ratchet to fit between the pwr steering box. Hardware was loose again on my AC compressor! Hmmm, maybe I didn't tighten everything up fully when I installed the missing bolts from Scar. 10mm fell out that secures manifold lines at tensioner bolt area. Might have spare still on Scar. Another task marked off the list.

sounds fun
vetting a new find is always an exciting part. along about 1992 i bought my 83 240d maple yellow on a thursday evening. it was showing 233k i believe. it looked nice but was a new purchase, right? but nevertheless i changed the oil and fuel and air filters and headed on friday evening for rice lake in canada, north of toronto. my wife said "you're crazy, this is a car you have owned one day!". i said "yep....it will be fine..." and it was. never missed a beat there and back and served faithfully for several years until something came along i had to have. there is nothing like a 240d to be able to place this type of confidence in on short aquaintance and not be burned. tom w

Still sounds like engine mounts shakin the engine to pieces, even just tightening em up might help. I like bicycle tire tube for 'chafing gear' wrapped around oil cooler hoses and anything else that might rub.

Well, the new mounts are sitting in the garage just waiting to be installed, so that will be done very soon. I didn't have a good experience last time I changed some, so I've been putting it off.....

Any chance of doing a pictorial write up on that? I'm looking at doing mine too but I'm too scared even to attempt it.

motor mounts - Notso difficult DIY but filled with hazards turning petrified allen bolts. Mostly common sense..... Must clean the allens perfect before taking a wrench to em. And gotta use allen sockets preferably 1/2" drive instead of crummy "L" shaped wrenches that will strip the allens for sure. Otherwise just sizzor jack the engine from below with piece of wood to protect the pan and pull the mounts....... 2x6mm allens on top and one 10mm below, if memory serves me well. I would compare it with replacing rear subframe bushings on 114/115's for degree of difficulty. Might need to propane torch the lower bolt to loosen it up or use a 3 foot pipe extension to turn the ratchet. Steel bolts fossilized into alloy threads where they attach is the same problem you see with thermostat housing bolts. And ought to grease the bolts before reinstalling em to slow down the oxidizing/fossil process.
Replacing motor mounts could be difficult but it aint impossible as first time endeavor, peter. Just psyche yerself up and plan on spending a few hours on it. It's just a few bolts - no pictorial necessary because it aint complicated. Just requires skillful handling of wrenches without snapping or stripping bolt heads and bashing your knuckles. Replacing shakey motor mounts provides instant improvement immediately appreciated. I suspect bad motor mounts create early drivetrain failure too.... caint be healthy for the tranny, flex disc, driveshaft support bearings etc. Hell the guy Jimmy bought this 240D from probly thought the engine was dying just because it needed motor mounts and seemed to be shaking itself to death. Add that to frequently running hot and yeah somebody unfamiliar with the primitive m616 would want to get rid of the car really fast. But if you ask me I'd never believe an iron head 4-spd 240D was completely dead or beyond repair unless it had seized or thrown a connecting rod right through the block. 240Dog is correct on degree of difficulty, and complexity of job. Which is to say, it isn't complex at all, very straight forward. The problem I had was re-threading the lower bolts back up into the engine 'arms'. One side really wanted to cross thread, and it was just hard to get a "feel" on how the bolt was re-threading.
No loosening issues for me, but we get less rot down here in the sunbelt. I almost tackled mine this afternoon but just had a service call come in, so off to work.............

Well, that and a few leaks probably explains the oil consumption......
