Well, got those darn engine mounts replaced this evening. Went fairly smoothly, but my digital camera is in one of it's "won't turn on" phases, so no pics.
When jacking up the engine I kept hearing this noise that did not sound good. Ended up being my 4x4 block of wood sliding down the oil pan. The Duck has that funky rear mount that bolts to cross member, and it is pure jelly. Will have to get one of those ordered. No engine shocks on this one. Old mounts were compressed some, but were not cracked or mush. Engine did not have a whole lot of shake, but has even less now. I even used Mother's Mag polish on the metal mount "covers". Well...... they were dirty! Car drove smoothly afterward. All went well. Drivers side screw tried to cross-thread up into engine mount arm, but just kept lightly wiggling and tightening and wiggling and loosening, etc..... Then I finally got the correct bite. a rewarding job for sure.

Houston, we have a name change
I tried to embrace "The Duck" since my youngest daughter proposed it. After all, she is the namer of all our animals and creatures, so it made since.
Well, it just never "fit". You can't force a name on these things (for those of us that choose this silliness that is....) After all, the wagon just settled in to "The White Car", and it has worked. So, with no further ado, may I introduce "The Squash". (no fanfare required.....) It just works better, and seems to fit for some reason...

Locked it up. Well it wouldn't lock from the key hole... so I shut the driver door and locked it from inside. Then locked the rear door. Now I have to find out how to break into my car.

Well, had a little cross town trip this afternoon, and knew I was getting close to having to filler-up with fuel. This was my first full tank, and first chance to check mileage.
Fuel gauge was just below 1/4 tank when I left. Blowing down freeway when I got into Cotton Bowl traffic near downtown. Fuel gauge starts "dancing" to "R" then back up to1/8 or so. Blasted through downtown heading towards Ft. Worth. Looked down at fuel gauge and it was 1/4 inch to the LEFT of "R". Then it popped back to just above "R". OK, time to find a station. Fast! Filled up, and it held around 12.5 gallons. (not sure how much a sedan tank holds. Forget wagon capacity too now that I think about it). Ended up getting 27.14mpg my first tank. Pretty much 95% city driving. Looks like I need to pull out and de-sludge my sender......

Your sensor must read low. I've usually put a few more gallons in than that and I never push it too far.

Owners manual indicates 240D tank as being 65 liters, including a reserve of 9.5 which is 17.2 US gal, with the 2.5 US gal reserve.
300D is 80 l, 21.1 US gal and 10.5 l, 2.3 US gal, respectively. My 240D's gauge exhibits the same erratic behaviour when it gets below three quarters full. It's all over the place by the time it get's down below the last quarter. I usually fill up when my reserve light comes on and I usually put between 13 and 14 gal in. - Peter.

Yeah the VDO fuel guage is a joke. I like how they "calibrate" the guage by drawing inconsistent lines between 1/4, 1/2, 3/4..... Always seems like the first quarter in bottomless and will take you 130 miles, then it drops like a stone below the 1/2 way mark - but I'm not complaining and mostly rely on the trip odometer anyhow. But Jimmy if you're getting really wild readings then it could be a ground problem in the instr cluster, as i'm sure you've already figured out.
Peter, thanks for the info on fuel tank sizes...... I guess MB wanted 300D's to travel the same distance as 240D's in between fill-ups. I would like to upgrade to the 21 gallon tank - thinkin I'd get an easy 550+ miles before refilling. Yes the larger capacity fuel tank is probly the only 300D item that can actually improve upon the 4-spd 240D...... heheheh. |

I removed the fuel sender from my 300D today to send to somebody, and it was so quick and easy that I went ahead and pulled the one from the 240. Cleaned them both. They were slightly crudded up in the bottom, but not bad at all. Definitely have some black debris in the tank of the 240. Time to find some Biobar (I think that is it).
I took pics with the wife's camera, but it won't go as small as 640 X 480. I tried......

You do know the sending unit itself wears out right? Both of the ones in my F150 were screwy, new units... problem solved.
