Replace those belts, kids!
I've been afraid to replace the four v-belts for fear that the horrendous rattling wouldn't go away. That would mean I might have a PS or water pump bearing going bad. Or worse.
Well, I finally did. Man, what a difference! Just nice normal diesel clacking. Also replaced the tach amp today. Slowly clicking off the repairs. Next week -- complete front end overhaul (minus springs). Still waiting to R&R motor mounts until I isolate the IP leak and fix the oil leak at the turbo.

My belts are pretty old (I've had the car 43,000 miles/3.4 years) and they were on there when I got the car. They still look fine though. I might change them out next summer...
I had a rattling too, it was my water pump, changed it about a year after I got the car (it was weeping coolant too), no more rattle. Sounds rugged and 617ish.
